Social Studies Curriculum

Textbook Analysis

Representation matters. Since a key component of Social Studies Curriculum is helping students develop an understanding of how to live, work, and function in our multicultural world, it is imperative that textbooks and lessons show diverse cultures in a positive light.

The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate how social studies textbooks portray various genders, ethnicities and religious groups. You are to obtain six (6) or more social studies textbooks with at least two (2) from elementary, junior high, and high school. If possible, try to find some books from christian school publishers and public-school publishers. You are to evaluate the textbooks and how they portray different groups.

Examine the following areas particularly:

  • Gender/Ethnic Breakdown
  • Classification for Men
    • Positions of Authority/Subordinate
    • Occupations
  • Classification for Women
    • Positions of Authority/Subordinate
    • Occupations
  • Classification for Girls
    • Positions of Authority/Subordinate
    • Activities
  • Classification for Boys
    • Positions of Authority/Subordinate
    • Activities
  • Minority Classification
    • Positions of Authority/Subordinate
    • Activities
  • Religious Groups
    • Types displayed
    • Message conveyed

You are then to write a 2-page analysis. What did you discover? Is there a difference between age groups? Publishers?

You also will make some comparison charts. There is an example of this provided.
