Detailed Instructions: Your essay should consist of 3 to 4 typed, double-spaced pages.  See pp. 98-101 in your textbook for a sample essay that may be used as a model for this assignment.  Include these parts in your essay:

 

  1. Title  Catch the reader’s attention with a creative, relevant phrase. Note the sample essays’ titles.  Avoid an overly general title (examples: “Educational Standards” or “Gun Control”).  Title can also act as a “hook.”  Capitalize every major word in the title; do not capitalize “the,” “an,” or “a” unless it is the first word of the title.

 

  1. Introduction paragraph (no more than 10 lines)  Begin with an attention-getting “hook.”  Introduce the topic/issue of the video and explain why this issue concerns you. (Significance, the “So what?”)  Identify the context of the video: author, title, original source, audience, purpose. The first time you mention an author, use his or her full name; after that, use the last name only.

 

  1. Body paragraphs (4 to 6 body paragraphs total)  First body paragraph (= SUMMARY of the video – around 175 to 225 words)  Summarize the video concisely. Refer to the list of criteria on p. 90.  Identify the main idea and supporting points.  Remain objective and neutral.  Use quotations sparingly (if at all), use attribution tags, and document them according to MLA format.

 

 Transitional paragraph  State the thesis of your response (pp. 109-10), focusing on rhetorical critique (pp. 92-5), ideas critique (pp. 95-6), and/or reflection (pp. 96-8) or a blend (p. 98).

 

 Strong Response body paragraphs (2 to 4 body paragraphs)  Write these paragraphs according to your purpose and thesis.  You will be:  Analyzing and evaluating the video’s rhetorical strategies (rhetorical critique);  AND/OR  Responding to the video’s ideas by extending or challenging the argument (ideas critique);  AND/OR  Reflecting on the video by connecting it to your own beliefs and experiences (reflection).

 

  1. Conclusion paragraph (4-8 lines)  Provide closure for your discussion.  Avoid simply restating the video’s main idea. Instead, explain your current thinking about the topic or issue based on this video.  Also, identify areas you want to research more.
