Importance of Originality in the Creation of an Effective Film Music Score

The paper will discuss the importance of originality in the creation of an effective film music score. The study will review empirical studies conducted on the invention of film music and its history. Music is a medium of entertainment and education platform. According to Buchanan (1974), film music was initially intended to silence the audience and minimize the sound of the noisy generators during the era of motion pictures. In the contemporary society, film music is utilized in some ways. One of this ways is to complement movies as background music to a story, part of musicals in a play presentation as well as being a background music that keeps the audience entertained. The changing environment brings changes in the musical requirements of the public, and this has led to a tremendous growth of the music industry. The growth has attracted some shortcomings, compromising the originality of the music scripts. Some of this shortcomings include plagiarism, imitation and duplication of parts of the work.

What is originality? The concept of originality in the creation of art is one of the most debatable topics. Postmodern theorists argue that there exists no single item of creativity and innovation that originates from a new source. As a result, scholars have differed with the copyright law that is supposed to protect originality, creativity, and authorship. The copyright law relies mostly on the early Romantic view of authorship (Kozul-Wright & Stanbury 1998). In today’s society, little or no creativity exists in the film music scene. From designers, photographers, producers, script writers and musicians, it is almost impossible to produce purely original products. Most of them are imitations, modifications or partly unique products which originate from using competitor products as a benchmark.
