Throughout documented history, there has been the gradual development of a writing genre in fantasy. This art involves the use of supernatural powers by characters to portray various ideologies and concepts about society and life in general. Fantasy writing has morphed into movies as evidenced by the revolutionary television series ‘Game of Thrones.’ This series has gotten global acclamation because it deviates from the norm of using magic as well as perfect heroes and their struggles with demons or angels. ‘Game of Thrones’ is also exceptional because it uses real experiences by fictional characters to educate the society about the real issues affecting them and the perpetrators of social evils. As the name suggest, there is a game taking place in the seven kingdoms of Westeros through political maneuvers to latch onto power. These games involve murder, irresponsible sexual behaviors such as rape and incest, mutilation, betrayal, and conspiracy. On the other hand, the throne symbolizes absolute power and control over the masses. The thrones desired by those involved in the game include family control, political supremacy, economic hegemony, cultural manipulations, and spiritual dominion. Surrounding the kingdoms is a wall that stretches along the northern border within which wars and power struggles are confined. Nevertheless, there are ravens, white walkers, and aliens that the wall cannot prevent from entering or invading the kingdoms (Pop Mythology, 2013). Therefore, the Kings have to deal with these externalities despite having their internal wrangles.
The concept of evil has many perspectives from which it can be considered. Therefore, the theological aspect of evil is that it is any action that leads to the deprivation of pleasure and contentment of one person at the expense of another’s satisfaction. This approach is usually in a broad sense because the universe is under the control of deity that is omniscient, omnipresent, and ever good. However, there are always the dark forces that are opposed to the goodness of deity, thereby leading to conflicts in nature. The discords in creation are caused by either natural phenomena or moral agents, that is, human beings. The moral evils include all the problems caused by humans, for instance, killing and lying with an intention to inflict pain, despair, or mere nuisance (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2013). Besides, evils are also characterized by the burden of responsibility on the part of the perpetrator of the evil. This is because these instigators derive their motivation from harming others, therefore, are answerable for the effects their action have on the oppressed.
As such, in the context of Game of Thrones, the kings as well as the societal leaders have the greed and urge to get to power through oppressing the majority. Additionally, they cause chaos within the kingdoms to create fear among the residents as self-preservation against the backlash. The main message that the piece communicates in the contemporary world is that the governments of the various nations and other people holding powerful positions in communities and corporations are embroiled in a seemingly endless tussle. Consequently, the infighting and instability create a favorable condition for the oppression of the masses. As a result, evil spreads is formed a strong part of societal norms. This is because the masses, despite plunging into economic, social, and familial turmoil, do little to counteract the wrongs. Sadly, some people end up buying into the ideas of corrupt morals for survival without considering the consequences of their actions (Jacoby, 2012). The wall on the northern border of the kingdoms represents the artificial mental limits that the world leaders have put upon the people. The limits have short term benefit for the leaders in the games for power, but they have dire consequences for the majority. Furthermore, the aliens in the film as decoded from the novel represent the minor problems that affect societies, but the leaders care less about the outcomes due to the psychological blocks they have infused in their people. Similarly, the white takers represent the real problems that have far-reaching effects and are almost uncontrollable. These problems include but not limited to environmental crises, heightened political unrests, scarcity and reduction of natural resources, and economic downturns. All these problems are caused by the unrelenting power struggles that cause harm to the world’s population. Therefore, the actions by those in powerful positions are evil and consistent with the characteristics of evil. This is evident since, despite the fatalities and pain inflicted on the people, the leaders still keep fighting for more control and power. As a result, more cases of death, family breakups, sexual immorality, betrayal, and conspiracy are on the increase.
The most notable aspect of the series is the consistent exhibition of women through nudity. There are several scenes where women are dressed scantily compared to their male counterparts. Despite the series having been set to represent the medieval period, the contemporary interpretation of the scenes is the moral decay in the current society where women are objectified for sexual pleasure. More so, they are depicted as prostitutes who had no rights to detest any acts of sexual harassment towards them. Although most of the women in the kingdoms seem contented with the status quo, few are rebellious and willing to undergo the consequences of defiance (Russell, 1992). They reject early and planned marriages as they advocate for their rights to living a moral life. On the other hand, the males are well groomed as per medieval expectations. This was mainly due to their duties to defend the territories as warriors and knights. However, they also represent moral erosion in that they are easily manipulated by the leaders to engage in social evils such as mass killings and torture of wildings. Furthermore, the men are also exhibited to indulge carelessly in raping, beating, burning, and even trafficking women and girls across the kingdoms. While this is viewed as a norm in the film’s context, it is an indicator of the moral weakness the men have and, therefore, cannot be trusted in protecting or embracing the rights for women.
According to the old assumption, women are considered to be evil due to the stereotyping and cultural predisposition. In many cultures in the world, both secular and religious, women are portrayed as disobedient to their husbands and other males in the society. Additionally, they are perceived to be weak in character and, therefore, easily bow to pressure from sexual and other advances from men. As such, they are prone to falling into temptations without considering the consequences thereof. Besides these weaknesses, women are traditionally considered as deceitful, seductive, and egocentric. They feel entitled to everything they desire in life regardless of the nature of the repercussions. Some of these beliefs are entrenched in religious subscriptions especially in Christianity where Eve is perceived to be the cause of all problems facing humanity since she was a victim of both deception and seduction (Witcombe, 2000). As a result, we are left to speculate on the reality of gender parity and the role that women should play in the society. Moreover, the definitions and restrictions of morality have to be definite in the contemporary world.
In conclusion, it is evident that there are many factors that affect the society based on poor and selfish governance, moral decay among the people, gender disparity, and externalities. However, these evils can be mitigated and prevented by taking individual and collective responsibility in ensuring that those in leadership positions are selected on a fair and reasonable basis. Additionally, they ought to be responsive to the needs of the people with minimal negative impacts if any. Religiosity should also be reinstated in the society so that there will be a well-defined code of ethics. The dangers of irresponsible sexuality should be made known so that people will make choices based on the facts provided. Similarly, the family unit should be united where the head is respected by all members of the household. Finally, there should be persistent advocacy for the rights to equality between men and women. This step is achievable through the social, economic, political, and religious inclusion.
