Social Consequences of Climate Change

Social Consequences of Climate Change

The world is pretty conversant with the negative implications of climate change for the environment at a time when such an issue has well affected other areas of life including our social life. There is little concern and knowledge regarding how changes in such aspects as weather pattern is changing our personal and social behavior across the globe. This is worrying, as the attitude would allow elements that could aggravate to a serious status at a time when it would be late to act. As suggested by related literature on social behavior and climate, the tendency to ignore the social implications of climate change will lead to an altered social structure that will even reshape other areas as politics.

Notable climate changes as global warming have had different reactions to the universe. While people are concerned about the implications of such changes on the environment, a blind eye is turned on social outcomes of such transformations. There are no enough study and knowledge that investigate the behavior of people in the transformed environments. Apparently, adverse weather changes lead to a shortage of primary resources that include food, water, and materials used to make life bearable. With such incidences of food insecurity (David Suzuki Foundation), the social behavior of the people is affected. Some people consider engaging in acts that are not morally approvable in such for food. This could include stealing, violation of established laws, and aspects as illegal poaching. As such, the society goes through a transition that reshapes its moral values including those of the future generations. Such an issue is worrying especially at a time when the entire world is overly concerned about other matters as environmental change. Altered ethical standards would lead to moral decadence in the society. It would open a door for more social crimes that would further destabilize the society. For instance, consistent illegal poaching in search for food would lead to the extinction of some wild animals. This would, in turn, lead to implications that would touch areas other than social aspects. In this light, tourism, which has social-economic values, would be affected. It adds value to the society regarding revenue to the government, and employment to the people. When such an industry is affected, people lose jobs leading to further exploitation of an already strained environment. But all this would be attributed to the failure of the community to consider the social implications of climate change.

Another silent social outcome of climate change is migration (Raleigh, Jordan, and Salehyan). With adverse weather conditions, such aspects as aridity have prompted some communities to move in search of greener pastures. Incidences of floods come with the displacement of people prompting them to move to newer areas. Lack of basics needs that are provided by the environment has people move from one place to another. Consequently, this affects the demography of the host nations. The available resources are strained leading to social ills that could include stealing, over-exploitation of resources, and depletion of non-renewable materials. This puts the future of a country at stake. The climate deteriorates further leading to challenges that are more social. Moreover, migration affects the moral values of a given society. New members come with varied beliefs that include religious doctrines that do not necessarily conform to morally accepted standards. This reshapes the new social setting an element that could bring about tension and instability. Apparently, some migrants have been found to infuse unacceptable cultures that could include extremism and sectarianism. They harbor ideologies that lead to such issues as terrorism an aspect that breaches the peace, causes the death of people, and loss of property. This would consequently change the face of a social setting, and affect its relationship with other societies. In this light, climate change can transform a society negatively posing immediate and future challenges. It should be a point of concern that the world is still ignorant of the fact that climate change can facilitate propagation of social ills. The culture of radicalization is spreading with migration an aspect prompted by climate change. More members of the society are buying and embracing the sick ideologies while governments are only focusing on vegetation cover, global warming, and other weather patterns. The societies will soon be turned to chaotic environments characterized by conflict and violence rendering them uninhabitable. This would all be attributed to climate change. Nevertheless, climate changes can result in positive aspects especially when resultant migration facilitates the spread of new ideas, perspectives, and ideologies that make society better.

Concisely, climate change can transform society into a non-responsive world. It can prompt people to indulge in social ills due to the inadequacy of such basic items as food and water. It prompts migration that allows propagation of different ideologies that may destabilize society. However, some ideas can benefit society. It would be dangerous to ignore the possible social consequences that come with climate change.
