Life as a freshman in College

In life, there are many events that will have a great influence on how one think and the decisions one makes. Some of these events have a great impact that they can totally change the character and life in general of an individual. These changes without even the knowledge of an individual but one only realizes how much their life has changed  or the impact the event has left in one’s life after it has already happened. For me, that event that happened to change how I make decisions and how I view certain aspects of life occurred when I enrolled in college a few years ago. Since that event occurred, September is exceptional month as it reminds me of enrolling to college and it makes me memorize how this happening led to a change in my life and has since made me view various aspects of life in a totally different view than I would before enrolling to college.

When I joined freshman, I naturally took note of newly found freedom. I was very excited and wanted to use this freedom to experience and create great memories of all the things that I had always been curious about but could not engage in them because I did not have the freedom and the time to experience. What I failed to understand was that the whole event of joining college and getting into this life would change my life in terms of how I make decisions and how those decisions affect my life. Integrating into the life of living in the dormitory and feeling comfortable was not that easy for me and I would wonder how other students were integrating well and getting very comfortable and feeling at home in their rooms. For me, the whole process was very emotional as I felt like I was betraying my parents by making another place feel like my home. I also felt the effect of being so far away from my parents and this would make me so anxious at times. However, this whole process taught me the importance of moving away and establishing a life of my own that was separate from my parents and being comfortable in a place even if my parents were not with me.

Another issue that had a great impact in my life was where I had to make new friends in a place where I knew no one. Back at home, making friends was easy since we would always be introduced to each other when parents visited each other and you were in their company. These parent visits always provided a good platform for making friends. Also, most of the children in my community went to the same school so it was easy making friends. However, in college as a freshman, I had to make friends from scratch and it was a really humbling moment for me. Here, nobody came from the same community as I did and neither were our parents’ friends that they would visit each other often and introduce us to each other. I had to do it on my own since there is no way I would survive college with no friends. This meant I had to move out of my comfort zone and try to make new friends on my own.
