Thematic Concerns in Literature

Poems are also part of literature. They are also aimed at realising what literature is intended to fulfil. Literature, as a discipline used language as it tries to express varied experiences that are seen from a human being. According to critics of literature, especially formalists, view literature as an autonomous entity. This means that literature is not in the restraints of time and other factors that are around it, including issues that are brought about by a human, such as the background of a literal person. Literature is, therefore, free for any explanations, provided they fall within the restraints of work in literature. This rule and critique also work with poetry, and we have the right to give our literal analysis, if in need of having a better scope of the subject matter. Such a case, poetry has all aspects that are in literature, including themes and motifs in the same. In our case here, as we try to make a comparison and contrast on the two poems, “In the Waiting Room” and “Contemplations.” Our main area of concern is on the themes, as they are explicit of whatever the poets meant to communicate to us.

Thematic concerns are imperative to us. They intend to communicate what a poet wants to communicate. Any works in literature that have no themes are no qualified to be literature. This is because aspects intrigue a poet and issues that make them write and put their ideas on paper. That is the reason why they write, as they want to communicate something through their work in literature, in a bid to trigger something unto the readers and maybe, cause some emancipation to the masses. That is the same thing with the two poets, Elizabeth Bishops and Ann Backstreet. They are all aimed at communicating something to us through their poems. They, therefore, lace the poems with thematic concerns that are of importance in our analysis.

The thematic concerns of the two authors are different. First, Elizabeth Bishop’s tries to make us see what he communicates by bringing the theme of identity to us. By identity, it simply means self-realization of who we are and what we are intended to be even as we live in this world. Thus, her main concerns are triggered towards that, and all she does is pose questions about identity. She tries to analyse how she can be a greater person in reality and issues concerning humanity. Thus, she tries to make many comparisons that she has with other people. These concerns can be seen as an issue that tries to create internal conflict within her, and she has to work within the entails of herself to get a realisation of what she is. The persona is trying to view and analyse identity, to see if she can find herself, or lose herself. This thematic concern is the one that shapes the message of the poem and makes us learn that Elizabeth was trying to communicate something to us. The poem, being told as a past tense, makes us learn that these issues has been eating through her since her childhood, and she is trying to see if she can have a realisation of herself.

The persona, at one instance, gets to hear her aunt crying from a dentist office and tries to envisage if that cry can be hers. One may think that they are connected and are the same feelings and emotions. This is a clear indication that we have some loss of identity, which the narrator is trying much to get to. The connection that she and her aunt possess is that that has emotions such that she tries to view herself as falling from space, having the thoughts that she shares the same mortal body as her aunt. At the moment, we get to ask ourselves if we have two Elizabeths in the poem, as the persona says that she felt as if you were she as if you were an Elizabeth. Before, Elizabeth is considering herself her aunt but is now gaining some identity as she tries to gain it all along. She acknowledges that she is an Elizabeth, and is among many others in the world.

Amidst her queries on her identity, Elizabeth tries to question why she should think that she is her aunt and this perplexes her a great deal. She does not realise what real identity is composed of. She goes ahead and jumps past the restraints of herself and the aunt, trying to analyse now what connection there is between all the people that are living. She wonders what similarities there were, and what held the people together. Was it the family voice in her throat, the national geographic or even the awful hanging breast. All these questions that she has are perplexing but he does not have an answer to them, and that is why the theme of identity gets to hold much in this poem. Therefore, it is clear that the theme of identity is the primary concern that Elizabeth has to us, and it is the motif that sees us to even a greater comprehension of the poem.

Coming to Ann Backstreet, her thematic concern is different. Her poem, “Contemplation”, tries to make us see something totally different from what Elizabeth wanted us to see. Her main area of concern is time. She tries to analyse more about time and humanity, comparing the life cycles of human, stones, trees and other natural phenomena. This is a clear indication that she is also concerned about how the order of the world is.

Ann tries to make a comparison between eternity and humanity and stands to a fact that humanity is more superior than anything else. This is because, despite the fact that they have limitations of time, there is hope for salvation. She talks about how a human should make good use of time, as the lifespan of human beings is shorter. This way, she incorporates the Bible into the picture. Ann wonders why no one wishes to die. People long for more time in this world, yet it is full of misery and bad luck. A sickness can eat into the morsels of one’s life and reduce them to nothing. We even have lost at times, yet human never wishes for death, which in this context may be considered peaceful.

The persona gazes at the sun and the sky. She looks at the course that the sun takes, looking at its beauty, sweetness, and delight. The sun has no restraints of time. It is a deity in a way. It makes her see the creator of the sun being even more in glory. The persona wonders on what to shower praise to, as the heaven, trees, and earth live more than human beings do. However, he is glad that in time, the glory that the latter have will fade, yet human has the chance to achieve eternity and immortality. Therefore, this a clear indication that the poet is concerned more about time and its entails in that manner.

In conclusion, from the above, it is explicit that the two poets are aimed at a making us learn a lot about various aspects of life. Their literature is clear, and it has motifs that make us get clear understandings of many aspects that are important to us. However, the main thematic concerns brought by the two writers are completely different, as the former has the theme of identity while the latter the theme of time. Despite the fact that these themes are different, they are paramount in our discourse on literature as they shed light to a clearer understanding of what a poet needs to communicate to us, thus increasing our knowledge of literature.
