As a volunteer in a major humanitarian organization that is assisting developing countries with improving their food supply, you have been selected to advise advocates in the African country of Chad (Republic of Chad) to help increase available food sources for their growing population, as thousands of people are dying each day from starvation. During a meeting with governing officials of Chad, you are asked to provide advisement to the government of Chad of how best to proceed with agricultural practices to increase productivity. Keep in mind that this region of Africa generally has lower levels of annual precipitation, as well as limited water accessibility for irrigation and agriculture in most regions. In a 2 page document, please advise the Chad officials on how to proceed; include the following:
” Provide a brief statement that compares and contrasts the benefits of promoting sustainable agriculture vs. GMO food production in Chad based on what you have learned in class so far (hint: think about population growth rates in this area, sustainability, use of fertilizers, use of water, etc.).
” What might be the environmental or economic drawbacks of introducing GM crops into the region?
” What environmental policies do you propose be in place before any GM crops are introduced, should it be decided by the governing body to move forward with GM agriculture?
” What other options, in your opinion, are available for developing Nations, such as Chad, to increase food supply for their growing populations?
