As noted in your textbook in Ch 08 ( Kuther, T. (2017). Lifespan development –1st edition), young children’s often engage in rough-and-tumble play. Sometimes during this play, children fall down and blame another child, or children get angry with others and engage in instrumental aggression.  Consider the following scenario:

Randy, Jeremy, Zane, and Joe often meet at the park on the weekend with their mothers.  The boys love to be pushed in the swings, climb on the equipment, and play pirates on a big toy boat.  However, sometimes Jeremy tries to take toys from the others, and often  hits them when they don’t want to share.  others.  Sometimes, Jeremey says he is a Power Ranger and is “powering up” and then kicks the other kids. Zane’s mom thinks the mothers should get involved and teach the children how to play nicely; however, Jeremy’s mom says that this is what kids do.


For this paper, write a full 2-page essay with references. You have to address one or all of the following questions in the essay:

1.    Do you agree kids will work it out and parents should not get involved? If you do, then what is the role of parents in the social development of children? If you don’t, how do parents encourage students to learn the skills necessary to interact with others successfully.
2.    How should parents handle situations in which their parenting styles differ from their friends’ and the kids play together?

3.     What are the strengths and weakness of parenting styles as it relates to childhood social interaction, especially in conflict?
