You will interview a couple and then write a case presentation of the case as if you are hypothetically treating the couple. Write the paper as if you have met with them 10 times and identify the stage of couple/family life of the couple. The paper must be a minimum of ten (10) pages (cover and reference pages not included in count). The body of your paper should include the following:
A. Presenting Problem
C. Description of the couple system/family system that developed and influenced the marriage
a. Describe repetitive interactional sequences (intragenerational and/or intergenerational).
b. Consider roles, unwritten rules, the inferred marriage contract, multi-generational influences, problematic triangulation, hierarchy, boundaries, and relevant cultural influences. You can arrange this section in a way that makes sense to you.
c. Formulation of the problem or problems. This should be a summary of the major problem(s) and a theoretical formulation of the underlying problem(s) that accounts for major relationship difficulties. Include any strengths which demonstrate resiliency models of couple’s therapy.
d. Treatment Plan. Describe the treatment modality you are going to utilize with the couple <link is hidden> Solution-Focused Treatment. State the treatment goals along with the strategies that you will use or are using as the treating clinician. Include any foreseeable obstacles to change. Ensure that your language of change (the treatment section) is consistent with your formulation of the problems and that both reflect your theoretical formulation and approach you are using to treat the couple.
D. Timeline of major events
Include the major events in the couple’s life together beginning with two separate timelines for each individual prior to their meeting. Then you will develop a couple’s timeline beginning at the time of their courtship and marriage and ending with the time they have sought treatment. Dates should include month and year. The timeline should be approximately one (1) to two (2) pages in length. This piece of the assignment will be clearer after we discuss the use of timelines in class.
If you were raised in a non-traditional family structure, or if you grew up in several different family structures due to separation, divorce/remarriage, or death, choose whichever couple system you feel most familiar with or whichever one affected you the most. You may have to adapt the structure of the paper to fit your situation.
Please Note: For all papers assigned in this class, you are expected to follow the APA publication style. Length of the assignment will be given as a minimum and maximum of FULL pages. General APA Guidelines suggest your essay should be typed, double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5″ x 11″) with 1″ margins on all sides. You should use a clear font that is highly readable. APA recommends using 12 pt. Times New Roman font. Include a page header (also known as the “running head”) at the top of every page. To create a page header/running head, insert page numbers flush right. Then type “TITLE OF YOUR PAPER” in the header flush left using all capital letters. The running head is a shortened version of your paper’s title and cannot exceed 50 characters including spacing and punctuation. If you do not follow the required format, you will not receive full credit.
You must include at least three references from journal articles or books (excluding your textbook). Internet writings from websites will not be accepted as valid references. References must be cited in the body of the paper, as well as the reference page. A letter grade will be deducted for each class meeting the paper is late.
