Into the wild prompt

Christopher McCandless is an intriguing, yet polarizing figure. Even author Jon Krakauer admits he can’t recount his story without a bit of bias; he can’t be an “impartial biographer,” as he says.

What is your first impression of McCandless having now read the first five chapters of Into the Wild? Is he to be admired for his “courage and noble ideas,” or is he “a reckless idiot, a wacko, a narcissist who perished out of arrogance and stupidity?” Is he something else entirely? A combination of the two?

What about his level of preparation? Does McCandless strike you as prepared for his journey to the wilderness? Is he mentally prepared? What about in terms of his supplies?
