Success may include some or all of the following:
Focus & Organization
• Paper is grounded in a well-written thesis statement that
addresses the prompt
• Paper uses paragraphing to establish introduction, development of
body paragraphs, and conclusion
• Paper establishes proper foundational thinking and then builds in
logic and insight
• Paper utilizes sub-claims ( topic sentences) to maintain continuity
of thought
• Paper uses transitional devices and a relevant group of consistent
ideas and phrases to maintain unity
Textual Evidence &
Support
•Ample, apt, and specific textual support is used consistently
throughout the essay.
•The writer uses well-chosen passages from throughout the novel
and may use passages that weren’t discussed in class, displaying
independent thinking and reading.
• All quotations correctly use MLA citation.
Depth, Scope, &
Sophistication of
Analysis
• The essay discusses the selected topic with keen insight and
understanding. Complexities are not reduced.
• Conclusions reached in the essay are precise and accurate. Insights
are buoyed by close textual reading and are at times profound.

understanding of the novel’s overall meaning(s).
