2. On the Union side, before the battle Chamberlain is saddled with a large group of mutinous deserters from the State of Maine. He doesn’t want to shoot any of them or use much of his small force to guard them. He addresses them hoping to persuade them to join his units in the coming fight. What does he say to them basically? What does he tell them the war is about? How well does his speech work?
3. At the end of the first day, General Longstreet, second in command to General Lee on the Confederate side, disagrees with Lee’s decisions and orders. What does Longstreet think the Confederate strategy should be? What does Lee decide to do in spite of Longstreet’s advice? They have the same conversation and same disagreement at the end of the second day. Note: when he fails to persuade Lee, in spite of his best efforts, Longstreet loyally carries out Lee’s orders to the very best of his ability. Granted we have the benefit of hindsight, but who do you think was right?
