Task: Use personal experience to draw connection between your life and political institutions

Prompt: Voting is considered an important aspect of civic life. However, youth (ages 18 – 29) vote at lower rates than other age groups; yet, at the same time, this age group is more likely to participate in social movements and volunteer activities. Essentially, young people are aware of their power, but choose to engage in non-electoral forms of participation. However, in the 2016 and 2018 election cycle, youth voters were the only age group to increase in their voting, so youth are voting more, but still less than adults and seniors. Think about your own reasons for voting, volunteering, attending a protest/rally, helping your family, bettering yourself so that you may be a role model for others, using the arts or social media to advocate for a cause, etc. Why is being involved important?

Data on youth participation came from CIRCLE: <link is hidden> (Links to an external site.)

CIRCLE, the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning & Engagement, is a non-partisan, independent research organization focused on youth civic engagement in the United States. We conduct extensive research on youth participation, and we leverage that research to improve opportunities for all young people to acquire and use the skills and knowledge they need to meaningfully participate in civic life. In all of our work, we are especially concerned with understanding, addressing, and ultimately eliminating the systemic barriers that keep some young people marginalized from and underrepresented in civic life.

The following guidelines should be used to develop each reflection:
1. Define what is means “to be involved” for you Note: the prompt suggests many ways to be involved,
which one applies to you
2. What made of makes you choose to be involved? This can be what inspires you or what makes you mad enough to get involved.
3. Why is being involved important to you <link is hidden> how has being involved helped you to understand your values?
You do have to use citations; however, there should be a thesis statement in this reflection paper.

Your reflection should between 200 and 500 words.
