In this exercise, you will try to figure out the genotype for eye color that you possess. You will be using your pedigree (family tree with details) to figure this out. You can upload a .doc or .pages or you can cut and paste your submission into the text box.
I realize this can be confusing at first (I’ll demonstrate in class on Thursday; if you’re not in class, feel free to email with questions). Basically, you’re just doing your genealogy back to your great grandparents. It’s okay if there’s missing data (in this case, that helps you figure out how strong your results are.).
In your submission, write a paragraph at the top and say how many people are on your chart, what their various eye colors are, what YOUR eye color is and what you believe to be your two alleles (hint: B, b, G, g are the only four possibilities we’re working with here). If there’s a blue-eyed ancestor, that person is bb. A Green eyed ancestor is more difficult, but probably G_. The brown eyed ancestors are either BB <link is hidden> (If you have no blue eyed ancestors, then your genotype is probably BB if your eyes are medium to dark brown).
If it helps to add your siblings, you can add rows at the bottom of the chart. When this is all done, we can make some guesses about people’s mtDNA and Y chromosome patterns (for the males in class).
You will need to open a word document and use a table. You can cut and paste the following table to get started:
1 Mother [Name] [Birth year] [Birth place Town, State, Nation] Eye color
1a Maternal Grandmother
1b Maternal Grandfather
2a Paternal Grandmother
2b Paternal Grandfather
1a1 Maternal Grandmother’s Mother
1a2 Maternal Grandmother’s Father
1b1 Maternal Grandfather’s Mother
1b2 Maternal Grandfather’s Father
2a1 Paternal Grandmother’s mother
2a2 Paternal Grandmother’s father
2b1 Paternal Grandfather’s mother
2b2 Paternal Grandfather’s father
