Topics: Please choose one topic as the basis of your five-paragraph essay (E12: 600-900 word count / Honors E12: 900-1200 word count). Then follow the instructions below.
Pursuit of Love: How is the pursuit of love depicted in sixteenth-century England? In the selected poems, the speakers pursue the objects of their desire. Reflect on how their advances differ. Consider the usage of tone, symbolism, and other poetic devices. Use examples from three of the following poems to support your response (cite lines from the poems).

Death and Loss: How are death and loss depicted in sixteenth century England? Use the selected poems to consider the usage of tone, symbolism, and other poetic devices such as conceits. Use examples from the following poems to support your response (cite lines from the poems).

Do the speakers rage against death? Accept it? Fear it?
Is loss something that separates and isolates us, or is death an event that brings people together?

Instructions and Resources:
✓ Types of Expository Essays. Compare and contrast: looks at the similarities of two or more things, and the differences. Cause and effect: states the main cause, main effect, or various causes and effects of a condition or event.
✓ Use MLA format. See the MLA information on the message board.
✓ Use the standard five-paragraph essay structure. Write an introduction paragraph with a thesis statement, include three body paragraphs with transitions and evidence from the text, and a conclusion paragraph that summarizes the main points and restates the thesis. Support the essay with facts, and use examples and evidence from the selections in class. Cite them properly in the body paragraphs. SEE RUBRIC
Use the warrant/claim organization outline on p. 245-246 in Writing with Power to help you. Use examples from the works to support your essay. Writing with Power (Chapter 7) explains how to write an expository essay from start to finish.
✓ When citing lines of poetry in the body paragraphs of the essay, insert a slash with a space on each side to separate the lines of the poem. Type the lines word for word as they appear in the poem; do not paraphrase. Add the line numbers, if provided, in parentheses right after the closing quotation marks and just before the closing punctuation. You should include the poet’s last name with the citation in this case. Example of citing poetry in-text: In the poem, specific imagery related to the woods is shown in the lines, “The woods are lovely, dark and deep / But I have promises to keep / And miles to go before I sleep / And miles to go before I sleep” (Frost 13-16).
Remember, the title of each poem should be in quotation marks. Also, the poet and the speaker of the poem are NOT the same.
