Topic 2: the exploration of women’s (and other) relations in Beloved

In what different ways does Toni Morrison fulfill Woolf’s expectations? In what different ways
does Morrison extend Woolf’s project and how? Why do Morrison’s relations among women
displace Sethe’s relationship with Paul D and what is the importance of the ending that reunites
Sethe and Paul D?

Topic 2: the exploration of women’s (and other) relations in Beloved
Reread chapter 3, which begins “Denver’s secrets were sweet” (34 Morrison 2004); chapter 23,
which begins, “I am Beloved and she is mine” (253 Morrison 2004); and chapter 26, which
begins, “124 was quiet” (281 Morrison 2004). Also reread chapter 27 from paragraph 3, which
begins, “Sifting daylight dissolves the memory” (311 Morrison 2004) to a page and half later,
ending with “’Every time a whiteman come to the door she got to kill somebody?’” (313
Morrison 2004.)
In A Room of One’s Own Virginia Woolf imagines what will occur when a woman writes well
about relationships between women: “[S]he will light a torch in that vast chamber where nobody

has yet been. It is all half lights and profound shadows like those serpentine caves where one
goes with a candle peering up and down, not knowing where one is stepping” (Woolf 83).
Consider the relationships between Sethe, Beloved, and Denver (In chapter 3, consider Amy
Denver as well.) and think about the relationship between Sethe, Denver, and the thirty women
who exorcize the ghost from 124 Bluestone Road.
