Homework Assignment 4 (25 POINTS)

You may work with a partner to complete these analyses, but each person should turn in their own interpretation/write up of the analyses.  If you choose to work with a partner and you turn in a hard copy of your assignment, please turn in one set of output and your assignments together.  However, if you submit your assignment through ACE, please include the SPSS output with each submission.  Make sure to turn in all relevant output, and be sure to highlight or mark the relevant analyses.

Late assignments will be penalized 1 point per day.

For this assignment, you will be working with the following measures from the PSY 506 Assignment #4 Data Set:

“PSY 506 Assignment 4” is a dataset containing the number of lightning strikes, inches of rain, inches of snow, number of traffic accidents, and high temperature in Minneapolis and Indianapolis one winter month.

Recall in Assignment #3, you interpreted a series of correlations related to weather patterns across cities. Next, you will be asked to interpret regression results from the same data.

Second, I want you to run linear regressions to understand the predictive relationships between these variables.

  1. Conduct a simple linear regression with rain in inches as the predictor of number of traffic crashes, the outcome.
    1. Under the Statistics tab, select Estimates, Descriptives, and Model fit.
  • In APA style, write up the results
    • Be sure to provide appropriate statistics.
    • In your write-up, note the similarities/differences between these results and the correlation between these variables you conducted previously.

Now suppose you want to understand which is the strongest predictor when all the variables are in the model.

  • Conduct one multiple linear regression with all four predictors (i.e., number of lightning strikes, rain in inches, snow in inches, and temperature in F) included in the model to test their relationship to our outcome variable of number of traffic crashes.
  • In APA style, write up the results
    • Be sure to provide appropriate statistics.
    • Written component: by looking at the output for the second SPSS component, which variable is the strongest predictor of number of traffic crashes? (hint: look at the coefficient type that can be compared across predictors). Be sure to justify your choice.

  • Finally, as another means of determining which is the best predictor, conduct a stepwise regression with the same variables.
