Background Information
This week we will look at federal and state laws related to PMHNP practice. As I think about state laws, my mind immediately goes to boundaries. Our lives are set within boundaries —not boundaries as in to keep us from doing what we want to do but boundaries to keep us safe and protect us from harm. Our legal laws and guidelines are put in place to protect our practices and protect the patients we care for.
One of my favorite Psalms is Psalm 119. While it is much too lengthy to include in this devotion, I encourage you to take a look at it. In this Psalm, the psalmist discusses the Word of God and how it keeps him, leads him, protects him, comforts him, and corrects him.
The psalmist uses terms to refer to God’s revelatory Word as law, testimonies, way, precepts, statutes, commandments, and judgment. As I discussed above, the fact that boundaries are not present to hold us back but rather to protect us from harm, the same applies to God’s Word. The Bible is not a list of “don’t,” but it is counsel to protect us from harm. God knows which choices will lead to destruction and which choices will lead to life.
