Different Levels of Basketball Essay

Different Levels of Basketball Essay.

I did my research paper on the difference between high school, college, and professional basketball. My senior project was on a 3rd-6th grade basketball camp. The reason I did my paper on the differences is because it relates to how the different age and ability levels affect the outlook of the sport. As an individual transitions from high school to college and then to a professional level, one may come to realize major and subtle differences in each level that is experienced.

James Naismith invented the game of basketball as something to keep men occupied. It has changed a lot from then to now.

It was first played with a peach basket with no hole in the bottom. There were no backboards. There was no 10-second line, three-second violation, and no frontcourt and backcourt lines. But the greatest difference between Naismith’s invention and basketball as we know it today was that in the thirteen rules, there were no provisions for dribbling.

He said the game could be played with as few as three or as many as forty players on the court at the same time. Naismith didn’t want a soccer or lacrosse goal because indoors, nine men would line up in front of the goal and it would be impossible to score, so the goal had to be elevated.

The 10-foot height on the baskets came about because the first peach baskets were attached to the edge of an elevated running track that happened to be 10 feet. And for 108 years, as players have grown to seven feet tall and beyond, the height has not changed. On a high school level it differs from college and professional because, in high school you have a drive and inspiration to do it. High school athletes do it because they like the game and its fun. Some kids look at it as an opportunity to do something with their life.

Basketball wasn’t made for how it is now. High school basketball should be fun but coaches’ have changed it into seriousness and hard work. High school basketball players look up to college and professional players as role models. Role models to them give them a drive to play the game also, wanting to be like someone can give you all the inspiration in the world. Basketball in high school can make you a better person, gives you work ethic, and it can change your mind on bad decisions. Mostly understanding the game can make you a better player.

The love of the game when you’re in high school can also make you want to pursue a career in the sport. The benefits of the game have changed a lot. If your grades aren’t up to par but you’re a great basketball player coaches will help you, even college coaches will do all they can to get you to come to their school. Prep schools are meant to prepare kids for Ivy League colleges but players use them for athletic purposes. Public school seniors who aren’t getting looked at by division 1 schools go to prep schools for a 5th year in high school.

This will give the player more exposure and a chance to get better, stronger, and increase there game. The trend of basketball-centered schools gained momentum when Tracy McGraddy (an NBA all-star) jumped from Mt. Zion Christian Academy, a prep school, to the NBA. Students who come from top of their high school class may be shocked to realize that their college classmates have the same academic and athletic ability. College is way different from high school. In a school were you might have been the best, now you’re going to college were there are many people around just as good and better.

That is a huge change, the practices are so much harder, they won’t take it easy on you, there paying for your tuition so you have to earn it. The magnitude of college is different from high school because, you’re playing in a gym with maybe 10,000 people watching you. You’re on television now playing the sport you love, with tons of pressure on you. You will go up against some of the best college athletes in the game. College basketball is moving at a faster pace then high school, which is why they work you so hard to get faster, stronger, and to develop more technical skills.

Now you’re living on a campus full of distractions, wanting to go to parties but there’s practice in the morning, or having to split time with school work and practice. You really have to be dedicated to the sport to play in college. Now this is the time were you have to be focused on the game. This is the working out, eating the right meals, no drinking, and getting to sleep at a decent hour. You may not have had to do this in high school but for your health it should be a requirement if you plan on going far.

In college you really have to perfect your game, it’s not about fun anymore it’s about competition, going head to head against your opponent, and pursuing a career in the game. Since you have to be a certain age to enter the NBA draft, kids are going to college for a year then making the jump to the NBA. Athletes are taking this very seriously; as if they need to win, need to be the best, this is were making the game a profession comes in. They don’t want to let there family and friends down. One of the biggest events a college basketball player would like to take there team is to the NCAA tournament.

The Final Four and the Championship game are the two biggest events in the NCAA. So if a player and his teammates can make it there, NBA scouts will be looking at them. The NBA is one of the biggest jumps you could make in your career of basketball. If you can make it to the NBA you are considered a great player. Even if you didn’t get off the bench, you made it to the NBA. There are nearly 550, 000 basketball players, about 50 make it to the NBA. So if you are one of those 50 you’re considered a great player. Now you’re entering a business.

NBA players are getting paid up to 10 million dollars a year. That is the biggest difference from high school and college. You’re considered a role model now, kids look up to you. You have in image to uphold, if you do something wrong and are on the news, your image is ruined. The NBA had the greatest basketball players of all time, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Earvin “Magic” Johnson and others still playing. Those are players you have to look up to try and be like them, even though you’re in the NBA that doesn’t make you the greatest.

The NBA is entertainment; people watch it because it entertains them. Fans pay a lot of money on NBA players yearly. Buying there jerseys, paying for tickets, and betting on games. The most obvious distinction between the NBA and the NCAA is the number of teams. The NBA is made up of just 29 teams were as college is made up of 200 teams. The NBA plays an 82-game schedule. Playing more games against fewer teams creates a dull sense of sameness for most NBA teams, thus while college teams rarely lack enthusiasm or motivation.

Usually college teams play only twice a week, so fatigue rarely is a factor. But NBA teams may play as often as four or five games in a week. Talent or lack or it also plays a role in the difference between the NBA and college basketball. Even the worst team in the NBA occasionally can beat the best team in the league. This is why each level is different. As an individual transitions from high school to college and then to a professional level one may come to realize major and subtle differences in each level of basketball that is experienced.

Different Levels of Basketball Essay

National Basketball Association and the Woman National Basketball Association Essay

National Basketball Association and the Woman National Basketball Association Essay.

We are going to talk about the differences about the National Basketball Association and the Woman National Basketball Association. Because right now the popularity on the WNBA is known than the NBA, mainly because of the excitement of the NBA brings to the fans is a lot more entertaining than the WNBA, obviously because in the NBA have more money to pay their players and to have nice venue. An interview on ESPN said that an NBA game draws over double the attendance of a WNBA game, which means that there will be more ticket sales as well as merchandise sales and endorsements.

This means that owners of WNBA teams are making much less money than owners of NBA owners, and thus have less to spend on players. Also, WNBA players only play 34 games in the regular season, compared to 82 games in the NBA season. Because they are not playing as much as NBA players, and they’re games are in much less demand, they should not be paid as much.

The rise in popularity of women’s basketball has led to the creation of the Women’s National Basketball Association WNBA in contrast to the Men’s National Basketball Association.

NBA Despite the fact that both women’s and men’s basketball seems similar at first glance there are significant differences between them. Perhaps the biggest difference stems from the popularity of each sport. Which leads to enormous differences in pay for male and female professional basketball players. Rule changes like the clock rules described above and jump ball rules are meant to make WNBA play more similar to an NBA game. There are also differences between these two basketball leagues with respect to teams that make it to the postseason.

Other rules between the two leagues are similar, such as NBA rules on jump balls being applied to WNBA play. Another significant difference between the NBA and the WNBA is that of the length of the regular season. Fan interest and appeal of the sport is another difference between the NBA and WNBA. In the NBA there are two 2 -minute halves in each game, where as the WNBA plays a game that is divided into four 1 -minute quarters even though the WNBA originally played games divided into two 2 –minute halves.

Perhaps the biggest difference stems from the popularity of each sport, which leads to enormous differences in pay for male and female professional basketball players. The rise of superstars in each league has also led to more familiarity with the sport and its most talented players, helping to increase the popularity of the WNBA in its beginning development. In the NBA league finals are decided in a 7-game playoff whereas in the WNBA a 5-game playoff is used to determine the league champion.

Despite the differences between each league, one similarity is that both have been increasing in popularity with fans which have led to greater media coverage of games from both leagues. NBA games and WNBA games are also structured differently with respect to the number of quarters and time played. The basketball in the WNBA is 28. 5 inches in circumference, which is one inch smaller than the basketball used by the NBA. Average attendance at NBA games is 17, while this number is 1 , for WNBA games.

Likewise, fans are more willing to pay a higher ticket price for NBA games($45 average) as opposed to WNBA games ($15 average). Some of these differences are directly related to playing the game. Many of the changes in WNBA rules have been implemented to make it more comparable to NBA play. For instance, the three-point line in the WNBA is 2 feet, six inches away from the basket but in the NBA the three-point line is located23 feet, 9 inches away from the basket. Many critics of WNBA complained that the rules of the game were too similar to college basketball rules as opposed to those of the NBA.

Another similarity is that the shot clock has been lowered to 24 seconds from 3 in the WNBA which will now adopt the NBA rule that there must be a 14 second reset of the clock when any defensive foul occurs if less time than that remained at the time of the foul call. Another major distinction between the two leagues is that there are only two conferences and a total of 14 teams in the WNBA but there are two conferences with 3 teams in the NBA. One similarity between the NBA and the WNBA is that the rules for both are governed by standard basketball rules except for ball size and the distance of the three-point line from the basket.

The only other significant difference in the rules of the game between the NBA and WNBA is the fact that in women’s basketball there is no block or charge arc located under the basket. It is likely that as it matures, the WNBA will make additional changes to its rules and style of play meant to create more parity with the NBA. WNBA The rise in popularity of women’s basketball has led to the creation of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) in contrast to the Men’s National Basketball Association (NBA). There are many other differences between Men’s and Women’s basketball.

The NBA season includes 82 games whereas the WNBA season includes only 34 games. Another difference that demonstrates the impact of gender in creating differences between the NBA and the WNBA is the size of the basketball. Despite the fact that both women’s and men’s basketball seems similar at first glance, there are significant differences between them. NBA vs. Some of the differences between NBA basketball and WNBA basketball appear to be related to the differences in size or physical capacity of men and women, like the longer three-point line in men’s basketball.

In conclusion to my comparison with the NBA and WNBA, even though everyone had a general idea of what the differences are when it comes to players in the NBA and players in the WNBA. I believe with my information that I have given to you that you have a better idea on what the differences and how they relate when it comes to male and female professional basketball players. I think we can all come to the same conclusion that no matter what the gender is or what the rules are, that both of them are out on the basketball court to just WIN.

Converse Shoes Essay

Converse Shoes Essay.

Converse one of the most popular brand shoes in history was created in 1908 in Malden Massachusetts. From the beginning, Converse campaign ad was aim toward basketball players and their fans. With their signatures shoes known as the Chuck Taylor All Star, Converse had the first basketball player working for them as a salesman. As time went by, the company needed a new direction for the new era coming with other competitor like Nike, Adidas and Reeboks gaining a share of the market.

” Converse had controlled eighty percent of the athletic market shoes at their heights”. In 1986, Converse release The Weapon Basketball Shoes. The campaign ad features Larry Bird of the Boston Celtic and Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers holding their own Weapon with the sentence “CHOOSE YOUR WEAPON”.

The highlight of the shoes was the leather construction throughout including extra padded collar that combine with “the Y Bar System” for extra support and comfort .The world was the intended target with this new campaign ad as he drew attention on one of the biggest rivalry in history according to ESPN.

With this in mind, Larry bird and Magic Johnson was the best two players of the National Basketball Association knows as the NBA. They both had multiple championship trophies with Mr. Bird having won two trophies and Mr. Johnson having won three.

The use of symbolic figures to create a sense of authority and credibility was tremendous. Fans, current players and the upcoming basketball players could identify with those two most valuables players .The NBA was a reputable organization with the best player around the world. The historical rift between those two teams which faces each other several time prior in championship, fuel the fans for interest in the shoes. Converse capitalizes on this factor to reinforce the sale of The Weapon.

For this reason, if you wanted to be the best in basketball, you have to get the best Weapon available which was Converse. This was just common sense .The best player in the fields are armed with the best Weapon, so mediocre or average Joes should have the best Weapon like suggested in the ad “the shoes they choose to do the battle in is the Converse Weapon”. Also, the connection between the players and their fans created inevitable interest in the ad. Everybody could intellectually connect with this ad. The logic was simple: buy the Converse Weapon and you will be the best. That is “One more reason why athletes like Bird and Magic depend on Converse for the best possible performance “as refer in the ad text. Under this condition, the potential buyers could achieve superiority with the Weapon shoes.

The desire of being the best is triggered by using those two superstars in this campaign. It runs so much in paradox with the fear of being a failure without having the appropriate Weapon. The promises of enjoyment and comfort is also exalted here with the capability of the shoes having” the superior traction, incredible cushion ,shocks absorbing EVA midsoles and the Y-Bar Ankle Support System”. Popularity with wearing those shoes was another avenue to gain social acceptance wherever in school, in the neighbor or in the basketball court around the world. Everyone in their lifetime had the desire of being a superstar.

This campaign exploited our envy of success by given us something close that we can identify with: two NBA champions and their new shoes. The image of the ad captures our attention immediately by just seeing the two biggest rival of all time next to each other’s. In conclusion, The Weapon campaign was very effective immediately after the shoes were release. The Weapon became the favorite shoes of the entire NBA player as well as the college and high school teams. The weapon was also worn by others great NBA players like Isiah Thomas, Bernard King, Mark Agume, Bill Laimbeer, Robert parish, Kevin McHale as well as Karl Malone .

The shoes became an icon and was reintroduce to celebrate Converse 100 years anniversary of continued success . We should point out that the ad was so successful that it was reintroduced in 2003 with others players. As a result, Converse is a pioneer in the marketing business using player as endorser of the product which led Nike (Air Jordan) as being the most ever sold shoes in the world. At the end, Converse understood one thing that worked with their previous campaign ad: “that a person can be a brand”.

Biomechanical Principles In Basketball Essay

Biomechanical Principles In Basketball Essay.

Basketball is a very competitive and popular sport in our society today. The NBA playoffs are going on right now and it has proved to be a very physical and intense post season. This sport takes an extreme amount of talent, coordination, and athletic ability to become a champion. There are a few biomechanical principles that are present during the game of basketball that help these athletes become great.

The first biomechanical principle that is present in basketball is Newton’s Second Law of Motion.

This law deal deals with acceleration in the sport. The law states, “The change in motion of an object is proportional to the force impressed; and is made in the direction of the straight line in which the force is impressed”. Newton’s Second Law is applied to the dunking aspect of basketball. When a player is about to dunk the basketball a certain amount of force must be produced to jump. Also a certain amount of acceleration must be produced to send the player upwards towards the rim.

If this does not happen then the player is going to not be able to dunk the basketball. The weight of the athlete also plays a big role in this action as well. A player who is heavier is going to have a harder time jumping as high as a player with less mass.

The next biomechanical principle I found that deals with basketball is another Newton law. Newton’s First Law deals with the law of inertia. This law is applied when a player is attempting a pass to his or her teammate. Newton’s First Law states that an object will stay in motion unless acted upon by another force. When a player is passing the ball to their teammate, the ball will stay in a straight line of motion unless a member of the opposing team attempts to steal the ball from its destination.

Lastly frictional force is another biomechanical principle that I found present in the game of basketball. The friction between the athlete’s shoes and floor must be very high. Static friction is used when the player wants to push off from the floor to make an athletic move. The type of shoes that the athlete wears is also going to play a huge role in how affective the players’ moves are. Frictional for occurs when the player pushes down and backward on the floor. It is the force that acts forwards on the player and backwards on the floor. If it was not for frictional forces the athlete would not be able to start or stop his or her motion.

In conclusion I found this biomechanical breakdown to be very interesting. Now that I have taken this course I look at sports from a greater biomechanical perspective. I feel that taking this course will really pay off as I become a professional in the field. Being able to break down sports into such a perspective is a great attribute to have as a future professional.

The Last Shot By Darcy Frey Essay

The Last Shot By Darcy Frey Essay.

Growing up in Coney Island seemed to be no easy task. For many, basketball may have been the only way out. For Russell, Tchaka, Stephon, and Cory it was the way out. It was a way for them to escape the rough environment and the poverty stricken streets that they were forced to reside in during their youth. Though each individual had their own destinies, the game of basketball was their release. It kept them from falling victim to the violence of the neighborhood and the almost certain failure that many of their peers eventually endured.

As the author implied, basketball was the only way to escape the poverty and crime of Coney Island. I believe in some ways that could have been true, but overall there are many other ways to overcome such adversities other than playing the game of basketball. Basketball may have kept them level headed and out of trouble, but as we see the sport did not prepare them for the game of life.

Though Stephon went on to have a professional career in the NBA, his peers weren’t as lucky. Basketball for them was just a simple means of a way out of Coney Island which they all received an opportunity at because of the sport, but apparently none of them seemed to have had any back up plans incase all was to fail. I believe the game may have been a major distraction to Corey, Tchaka, and Russell. They never prepared themselves to not make it to the NBA, which left them all with nothing to fall back on.

I do think basketball is a valid option for most students to escape poverty, but without the talent and character of someone like Stephon, getting drafted to the NBA is virtually impossible. Basketball may open a few doors but there’s still no guarantee. There’s a responsibility to knowing yourself and when it’s time to start taking other things such as the degree’s that can be earned because of the sport seriously. As the story implies, and in this case in particular, there were four and only one went all the way. Corey went on to working for his father’s plumbing business. Tchaka ended up working janitorial in Las Vegas making $8.50 an hour while trying to provide for his fiancé and son. Lastly, Russell wound up, in what in my eyes appears to have committed suicide on the train tracks in San Clemente. Not what they dreamt of as Lincoln High basketball stars.

Coney Island was a place that often left people timid. The gangs, the drugs, and the more than often violence that took place on a regular basis, ultimately encourage these student-athletes to making a strong attempt on leaving Coney Island and escaping the poverty. Tchaka wanted bad to stay away from the area that he wasn’t quite used to coming from Jamaica Queens. People were more upscale there, so Tchaka wasn’t used to seeing cars being blown up on residential streets were people lived. Crack and cocaine were drugs that swept through Coney Island, and it was something the student’s mothers were proud their children didn’t do. A life like this was just something these four just wanted no part of.

Though many student-athletes may receive scholarships to go to college, I feel that Lincoln high school does not adequately prepare them for college. Lincoln High was not known for its academics, they were strictly base on athletics. Many of the players came to Lincoln High specifically to play for the basketball team itself. They had one of the best programs in the PSAL. Most players that had the talent would get by on the fact that they were star players on the basketball team, sort of like special treatment as some would call it.

The relationship between academics and basketball at Lincoln high was a very personal one. As the story implied, the head coach of Lincoln High actually agreed to stay at Lincoln for as long as Stephon was a player. That’s what ultimately persuaded Stephon to go to Lincoln High. Also in the story, Stephon had mentioned that he was going to hit up the coach for money for lunch and things of that nature, money that Stephon was certain that he was going to get. Most of the faculty knew what basketball meant to the school, and so did majority of the athletes that went to Lincoln. They knew that they had the best chances at Lincoln to escape the poverty of Coney Island.

Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant Essay

Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant Essay.

Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant are two of the greatest basketball players to ever live. The way they play the game is memorizing. These two athletes are very extraordinary, though only one can be called the greatest of all time. The debate still and will always continue on who is the best. On one hand, there is the 6 time NBA champion in Michael Jordan; in the other there is the phenom who scored eighty- one points in one game, Kobe Bryant.

In my opinion, Michael Jordan is and will always be the greatest basketball player to ever play the game. When I think of the word, “legend”, only one name comes to my mind and that name is Michael Jordan. Even the president of the United States thinks MJ is the better choice. “Oh, Michael,” the lifelong basketball fan told The Associated Press “I mean Kobe’s terrific. Don’t get me wrong,” Obama said of the four-time NBA champion.

“But I haven’t seen anybody match up with Jordan yet”.

Michael Jordan tops Kobe Bryant in many ways, such as: offense, defense, and overall career achievements. In today’s generation of basketball superstars, there is one distinguished player, Kobe Bryant that holds a reflection to another known superstar, Michael Jordan in his ability to play the game, offensively and defensively; however, they differ in their overall performances. Although sports fans attempt to compare the two players, many will agree that Michael Jordan carries the best offensive and defensive numbers, while Kobe Bryant holds the title of the youngest all-star to ever enter the National Basketball Association.

Both Jordan and Bryant were offered huge endorsement deals, with Kobe Bryant taking the lead as one of the largest global brands, in basketball history. The game of basketball is a rewarding sport that allows its players to give back to the community. There is no competition, when it comes to giving back to the community, as each player is equally involved in charitable organizations. In the professional basketball world, sports fans will agree that Michael Jordan is the better player, while other fans are loyal to Kobe Bryant. When looking at offensive and defensive numbers, objectivity and a hard look at the facts leaves one conclusion without a doubt, that Michael Jordan is one of the greatest players in NBA history. He is famous for blocked shots, rebounds, and scoring an average of 30 points per game, during his career (Squidoo, 2012).

As an offensive player, Jordan has the advantage. In his best season, his fans will count on him to average 37 points per game compared to Kobe Bryant’s best season of 35 points per game. Michael Jordan, a true team player, averages eight assists per game in his best season, and an average of five assists during his career. Unlike Jordan, Kobe Bryant, as an offensive player averages six assists per game during his best season, and he is close to beating Jordan’s average with four assists per game.

Sports Jargons Essay

Sports Jargons Essay.

“They’re on fire,” this one’s in the bag,” and “we played our hearts out” are a few commonly used phrases in the sports world. These terms or phrases can also be known as a jargon, which are specific words or lingo used by a particular group. According to Leslie Savan in her article “Black Talk and Pop Culture” she states that today’s language is heavily influenced by what she calls black talk. Words like “yo,” “bro,” and “player” have found their way into today’s culture.

Similarly many major sports use jargon but three familiar ones are volleyball, baseball, and basketball.

Bump, set, and spike are the three main components of volleyball. These three words are everyday words for lovers of this sport, but for others, volleyball lingo may be a bit confusing. To bump the ball simply means to pass the ball with one’s feet shoulder width apart, knees bent, and forearms together straight forward. Setting is always the second pass and is an overhead pass by just using one’s fingertips.

It is important for the setter to use both hands; otherwise, it is an illegal pass.

Although bumping and setting are important, spiking is by far the most exciting part of the sport. This is when a front row player jumps up and with an open hand slams the ball. The intention of a spike is to return the ball to the opponent’s side with such force that it is difficult to return. Although these words comprise the main terminology, there are also many other sayings used in this sport. “Kill the ball” is often used when referring to a good spike. This phrase could easily be taken the wrong way; someone may think it physically means to murder the ball, but that is not the case. A “free ball” is another example that is said a lot. This term is basically a gift given to the opponent.

Another sport that has a high usage of jargon is baseball. This sport has been around since the 1800’s, yet many people are still unfamiliar with a few of the terms. For instance, a home run does not literally mean to run to your house; it means to hit the ball over the outfield fence or wall, or to make it all the way around the bases and back to home plate. A pop fly can also be misunderstood, but the real definition is when the batter hits the ball high in the air which makes it easier for the defender to catch. The two categories that professional baseball players are placed into are Major League, and Minor League. This has nothing to do with size, age, or looks it strictly has to do with the skill of the player.

As well as volleyball and baseball, basketball also includes the use of many jargons. “He makes the buzzer beater for the win and the crowd goes crazy!” A buzzer beater must be someone who is physically beating some sort of buzzer. This is not the case in the game of a basketball term “buzzer beater” is used when the clock is almost out of time and the player with the ball shoots to try and make it in right before the buzzer goes off. A few other heteronyms are lay-ups, air balls, and traveling. A layup is when an offensive player quickly dribbles the ball down the court and once near the goal attempts at a shot. An air ball is a shot at the goal that is completely missed, and is quit the embarrassing shot. Traveling has multiple different definitions such as traveling in a car, but in the game of basketball it means the player with the ball took a step without dribbling the ball.

In conclusion, I believe it is safe to say that jargons have been commonly used for a long time. New slang is added to society on a daily basis. In Leslie Savan’s article “Black Talk and Pop Culture” she says, “Today, the language of an excluded people is repeated by the nonexcluded in order to make themselves sound more included.”, which I believe is how society views the sports world. Volleyball, baseball, and basketball are three of the many sports that use jargons.

The game is played with a round ball and two teams with five players each.

The basic rules are: If you run or walk with the ball that is called travelling, which means the other team gets the ball. If the ball is thrown over the basket it is considered out of bounds, which means the team who had it loses position of the ball, if you stop dribbling and start dribbling again it is known as double dribble, each team can only have up to 5 substitutes, two points given for a field goal, the games go for 40 minutes broken into halves, one point is rewarded for a free throw and you can not do any contact.
