Cloning in general has been a rising debated issue across the globe since before Dolly the sheep was cloned in 1996.The success of being able to clone animal brought scientists to wonder about a more challenging task, cloning humans. This challenging task is morally wrong and should not be stood for. However, some people seem not to realize the negative aspects that cloning would bring into a world which is already nuisance. We cannot deny that cloning may help in saving one’s life or making someone’s life better but will it cause nuisance to the society with the misuse of the cloning process?

First of all, the advantage of cloning is this process provide organs for transplantation where if vital organ in human body is cloned and served as a backup system.

The cloned body parts like heart, lungs liver and many more could be a lifesaver. Furthermore, when the organ failed to function well, it may be replaced with the cloned organs.

Moreover, the doctors can clone identical organs like kidney so that the patient will not face risk of rejection of the kidney after operation. Thus, it will be safer and directly benefit the patients. In the case of accident victims, or transplant patients, obtaining the needed tissues, or organ parts in a timely manner can mean the difference between life and death. In this situation, the ability of being able to produce needed tissue materials and organs in the lab would provide a timely source of treatment. In short, cloning helps to save one’s life.

Recently, the success rate of current infertility treatments is very low. Further, the couple has to go through tormenting procedures with a small chance of getting a child. The advent of cloning technology will make it possible for infertile couples to have child than ever before where the cloned embryos are implanted into their bodies. This method, while providing couples with the chance to conceive, and also the capability to determine the gender of an embryo, which would make it possible to select which embryo lives and which one dies depending on its gender. Thus, cloning may help to eliminate the mental and physical pains among the infertile couples.

Besides that, cloning has the ability to determine the health of an infant. The process of cloning can eliminate all the worrying regarding the child’s health. Scientist can alter the genes to ensure a healthy child. For example, if a mother has given birth to two children which suffered from Down’s syndrome. Doctors can manipulate and balance out the number of chromosomes in the embryo to give the mother a normal and healthy child. Through the cloning process, parents can also prevent their child from inheriting their sickness that their child might high risk of inheriting it. Thus, the cloning process might help in ensuring younger generation from inheriting unwanted genes from their parents.

In a nutshell, I strongly feel that cloning should not be banned from the society as this process has contribute lots of advantages to the society and provide a better life for the future generations. Every coin has two sides, cloning has its flip side too. Nevertheless, we cannot deny that cloning might cause nuisances to the society if it is misused by other irresponsible homo sapiens for their own benefit. However if it is used in an appropriate manner, it will contribute lots of pros to the world.

Understanding the importance use and history of medical terminology can seem complex and difficult to understand. Although these terms may seem intimidating, they can be deciphered and understood if you know what to look for. The meaning of the word medical terminology is a system of words that are used to describe specific medical aspects and diseases. It is based on standard roots, prefixes, suffixes and combing vowel. Most medical terms is made up of Greek and Latin roots. Being able to understand these roots can make knowing the terms easier for yourself and patients to understand the meaning behind them.

If you choose a profession in the medical setting you must be able to know and fully understand medical terminology.

Medical words are constructed in parts to Break down the words into simpler parts. These parts are prefixes, suffixes, root words and vowels helping you to understand the meaning behind the terms more easily. Medical terms will contain one or more root words.

The root word should give you an idea of what the term pertains to. As in the word pancreatitis, the root word would be pancreas which would refer to the pancreas. Prefixes may be added to root words to add more meaning behind the term. Usually the prefix is in the beginning of the word. An understanding of prefixes will help you to understand the prefixes surrounding medical terminology.

As in the word contraceptive, the prefix is contra, which means against. Suffixes are like prefixes, they intensify the meaning of the term. The suffix of the word is usually at the end of the term. They intensify the meaning of the term. Some suffixes are logy which means the study of, sis which means condition or state, and ose which means pertains to or relating to. Then you have the vowels in terms, which connect the root word with the prefixes and suffixes. As in the word ovulation, the letter u is used to combine the root and suffix of the word together, allowing you Medical Terminology 3 to pronounce the word easier.(Saladin. 2007).

The origin or medical terminology begin in the Roman Empire. The history of medical terminology from ancient to modern is divided into five stages. The very first stage is represented by a man named Galen of Pergamon in the Roman Empire. Galen utilized a limited number of terms, which were words of the Greek in this period. The second stage came about early in the 16th century by a man named Vesalius in which the anatomical structures were detailed illustrations. He devised a system that would point out the difference between anatomical structures with ordinal numbers. The third stage happened in the late 16th century and was marked by a large number of specific anatomical terms for the muscles, vessels and nerves.

During the fourth stage in the 17th century there were many anatomical textbooks written mainly in Latin and in modern languages in the 18th and 19th centuries. There were many terms expressed differently by different authors. The last stage began the end of the 19th century when the first international anatomical terminology in Latin was publishedas Nomina anatomica. The anatomical terminology was done over and over, until the current Terminologia anatomica both in Latin and English (Sakai, T. 2007). Latin and Greek were the first people to use medical terminology.

Knowledge of medical terms is very important in the medical field. If you don’t know the difference between a basal rate and a bolus, then how would you know what to use on the patient? And all medical facilities use medical terminology. If you don’t know them you will be lost. Detailed terminology is needed for the doctor so they can accurately describe what is wrong, but basic terminology is needed for the patient so they can understand the problem.

Medical Terminology

My career choice is to become a medical assistant being a medical assistant, you will need to know the terms and be able to identify them. You need to know the anatomy when giving an injection. Knowing Medical terminology will be helpful when filling in patients’ charts, calling in referrals to specialists and when speaking to the physician. Medical assistants perform many clinical and administrative duties in a health care setting. They may answer phones, file medical records and undergo basic business functions. Medical assistants may also work directly with patients documenting medical histories, drawing blood and discussing test results with the patient. A medical assistant must understand medical terminology and how to quickly and easily define the terms, and answer any questions the patient has.

When becoming a medical administrative you also need to know the use of medical terminology when dealing with patient files, and patients themselves. This type of job deals with medical record management, insurance processing, coding and billing, management of practice finances, information processing, and office management tasks. A Medical Administrative is familiar with clinical and technical concepts required to coordinate administrative office functions in the healthcare setting. If you are not able to understand and or speak the terminology, you could be a danger to patients. The words can be broken down into shorter words that mean a specific thing, and learning them is important.

What if the doctor tells you the patient has a uvular edema, and you don’t have a clue as to what that is, or what tests need to be run. Terminology is not as hard as it seems and first your job could be to write down on referrals what the patient has been diagnosed with. Reading doctors’ writing is not the easiest thing to do, and you may need to ask the doctor. So, if the doctor tells you and that is not a word in your vocabulary, you can’t spell it and the Medical Terminology 5 Insurance people deny the insurance, who is to blame? How sensitive is skin to touch? The receptors for the sense of touch are scattered over the surface of your entire body, however those receptors are more closely grouped together in certain parts of your body. In this activity you will investigate the distribution and sensitivity of the touch receptors in the human body.

Procedure

1. Obtain 8 large paperclips, a ruler, and masking tape. 2. Bend paperclip to form a “U” or “V” shape so the ends are 1/2 centimeter apart. 3. Put masking tape across the “legs” of the paperclip to maintain the end distance of your caliper.

Label the paperclip end distance on masking tape 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make calipers with measurements of one, two, three, four and five cm. For wider distances, use sticky tape to hold an opened paperclip onto the zero mark of a ruler. Simply hold another paperclip at the appropriate distance: six cm, seven, eight, nine, ten, twelve, fourteen, sixteen, eighteen, and twenty centimeters. 5. Lab partner must close eyes tightly.

6. Starting with the largest distance, place either one or two ends onto your partners skin (ALTERNATE RANDOMLY so the partner can’t guess!!!) 7. Has our society become excessively materialistic – SAT essay Essay

Though it cannot be denied that modern society is profoundly materialistic, there is nothing inherently wrong with a society that values the production and consumption of material goods. Ample historical evidence suggests that societies that devalue capital wealth and material gain will be unstable and short-lived. Materialism – whatever value we place upon it – creates a stable societal structure.

Just turn on the television, peruse the magazine covers in a supermarket, listen to any one of the top forty radio hits and you will be immediately faced with the rampant materialism of modern society.

What do we value? Material wealth and celebrity. Why do we worship Paris Hilton, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos. Steve Jobs? Because they have tremendous buying power and perceived power.

What shows do we watch? American Idol, Cribs, Pimp My Ride, My Sweet 16 to name a few. All these shows lift conspicuous consumption and flagrant displays of wealth and hedonism to elevated levels. Our society is very much like the ancient materialistic society of Rome- in which wealth and power were paramount.

Thus it cannot be denied that a materialist spirit pervades modern society.

But who’s to say that materialism is wrong? Our philosophers praise the virtues of materialism. Our prophets include the venerable John Smith, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Keynes and all the myriad materialistic philosophers. And how the anti-materialist philosophers have waned in influence and been discarded to the waste bin of history: Karl Marx, Lenin, Charles Fourrier all have been relegated to the trash heap.

Capitalism is the ethos of the day- the driving force of our world. Just ask the Chinese, the Russians, who have discarded their antiquated philosophies in exchange for a more durable, albeit potentially cynical materialism. Materialism acknowledges our innate desire to have more than our neighbors, to do better than the Jones. Because it caters to an inborn human need, materialism will always provide a more stable structure for a society.

Modern society is deeply materialistic. That’s because materialism works. It validates human needs and desires and works with man’s actual structure rather than the same lofty ideal or fantasy. Let us then celebrate our pervasive materialism and acknowledge its efficacy and virtue.
