            Marilyn Ray Worley discovered the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) three years ago.  That moment she realized, after that life-long fight against being fat, that it doesn’t mean being unhealthy, and that without being humiliated or being embarrassed, fat people must accept their bodies.  She wrote an essay entitled “Fat and Happy: In Defense of Fat Acceptance” which targets those fat people undergoing hard dieting but still didn’t loss weight, and that there’s more to life if they would accept their body and live it to the fullest, free from humiliation.


            Mary Ray Worley pointed out that living in an American society during the twentieth-century, a single person would believe and will surely have the feeling that being fat is a serious personal, social and medical problem.  And because of that, they will never choose to be fat and would rather choose to die or cut off a limb than to be thrown with cruel jokes.

And that fat people became deeply ashamed of their fat bodies and are spending their lives trying to pretend what they were not.  In addition to that, thinness implies self-discipline and self-respect while fatness means self-contempt and lack or determination.  “Pressures like these must certainly contribute to the shortening of many fat people lives.”, as an excerpt from the essay.  This is how she described the “Fat and Happy: In Defense of Fat Acceptance”, as bold as her experience when she was a young chubby child who started dieting when she was at an age of eight, until her age turned to 48 as of now.

            It was on the month of August 2000 that she attended an annual convention held by the National Association to Advance Fat acceptance (NAAFA).  The place was in San Diego but she explained it to be like ‘visiting on another planet’.  She had realized, on her week-long stay on that convention, that her whole life before that night, she was carrying the heaviest burden, how her body shame had affected her entire life.  This part of the essay, this little part, would be the piece of the whole where realization is going to happen.  She had opened the mind of other fat people that there still places where body shame would not be a hindrance upon reaching happiness on everyday life.  The author had made this to be an eye opener, ear catcher, and mind shaker for the readers and listeners.

            It was the first night of the convention where this entire ‘different planet’ had shown its true nature to her.  It was a place where all those fat people have freedom, without shame, had exposed their feelings and had expressed their selves where it was very different from what she called her home planet where fat people rather would be embarrassed and not an expressive one.  They are on their stylish swimsuits, a hundred or so of fat people who had now given the opportunity without hesitations to be in their body, whatever it may look like, that their self consciousness had no place to enter.

In this part of the essay, she had given numbers of examples of things that those fat people can do just like the other thin people do.  There is freedom without any shred of embarrassment and hesitations as support for her claim while citing those fat people on their stylish swimsuits.  Just like how she addressed that place as a ‘different planet’, the author wanted to show how people perceived fat people on their place (or what she called her ‘home planet’) as very different like the distances between planets.  She had used a figure of speech that will give impact upon showing the differences.

            “We’re not giving up, and we’re not letting ourselves go.”  This was her answer when she had encountered somebody asking the question if this was the best way for them, the fat people, to live.  The person who asked that question might be pointing on to the place she called the ‘different planet’ and could that the best place and in that way on that place would be the best way.

  She answered bravely that there will be no giving up.  She had made a statement of a promise that even on the outside, there would be no hesitation, there is a freedom, that they will be freely can live without being embarrassed carrying their heavy burden, even on their home planet.  In this part of the essay, the author was challenging and encouraging the readers and the listeners, to live out their life freely as they want it to be.  This will serve as a motivator for those fat people that the author had commanded them.  The author in this manner, had reached the silent part, and might opened up the fat people’s consciousness to go out of their cages and show they are part of the planet.


            The speech happened last August 8, 2004 and she was applauded by 100 other very fat men and women.  It was a success for the essay “Fat and Happy: In Defense of Fat Acceptance” and for Marilyn Ray Worley and for each and every fat people who are now winning some battles against humiliation, and that thins and fat people are beginning to live the same, normal, and a happy life, the way each and every one had wanted to life to be, the life taken from the fat people before, and now had been given back to them.

My best friends are the most tremendous friends I could ever ask for. I can talk to them about anything, or not say anything at all. We support each other in what the other does. We can be apart for so long but when we see each other again, it’s like they never left. I think that friendship is more essential than romantic love. You have the comforts that only a best friend can give you, the care and concern from friends, and even if you lose or grow apart from a friend, it can help you become a better friend.

I found this quote about best friends, “‘Best friend’ isn’t just a name. A best friend is someone who’s there for you, no matter what.

You can trust them, with anything and everything. Best friends share tears and laughs, almost like their emotions are intertwined. Most importantly, you can always count on a best friend. ” One of my best friends, Kevin, has been there for me through the depressing times as well as the joyous times in life.

He’s been my best friend since 4th grade, I trust him more than anyone. I can talk to him about anything. Even after he moved away, he’s still there for me when I need him. He’s helped me through a lot. Another one of my best friends, Ivie, has been my friend through tough times also.

I’ve been there for her when she needs me. For a while, I felt as if she was one of my only friends and I was grateful for her friendship. We’ve been there for each other through the tears as well as the laughs of life. I can also talk to her about anything. Without my best friends, I don’t know where I would be in life. A quote by Henri Nouwen says, “When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand.

The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares. ” Sometimes, you can never know what a friend is experiencing or what to say to them when they’re sorrowful. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is to just be there for them, just to listen. Kevin and Ivie have done that for me many times. More times than I can count, after I tell Kevin about a situation, he gives me impeccable advice on how to handle it.

I’ve been there for Ivie to vent to me, whether it is she’s dismal or annoyed. Most of the time, I never know what to tell her, so I just sit there and listen. Although, that usually ends up being what she needs. Not advice or kind words, just someone to listen and try to understand how she’s feeling. If my friends didn’t care for me, then Kevin and Ivie wouldn’t always listen to my struggles. If I didn’t care for my friends, I wouldn’t listen to their struggles. “Rare as is true love, true friendship is rarer. ” says Jean de La Fontaine.

Although, in life, we become devoid of friends because of something irrational or we grow apart from them, it can be a heartbreaking. You trusted this person and then they left you without an explanation. From my experience, it may be sad, but it’s a good thing in a way. You learn that you need to change somehow and become a better friend. Maybe you lost a friend because you didn’t listen to them or you didn’t communicate efficiently, you quarreled with them over something irrational, or even having to choose between friends.

I’ve lost many friends, probably because I never really saw them outside of school, when school ended we didn’t really stay in touch, and I even had to choose between my two best friends, at the time. I’ve learned from losing friends that you have to communicate, hangout with them outside of school; without that the friendship fades. I hope that I have finally found my true friends. I think that friendship is more essential than romantic love. You have the comforts that only a best friend can give you, the care and concern from friends, and even if you lose or grow apart from a friend, it can help you become a better friend.

My best friends have been there for me through everything. I don’t know what I would do without them. I’ve cared for friends, in return, they cared for me. Fat is a Feminist Issue Essay.

Susie Orbach writes about the reality that many women face with problems of obesity, overweight, social roles, and sex-stereotypes in the US. In “Fat is a Feminist Issue” the author writes in extend to the main problem that women face with overweight in America, how it has become a serious issue in the topic of obesity, and the typical “sex-role stereotypes” differences that exist today (449).

Manipulated by media ads and the pressure on women to pursue the ideal physical and beauty appearance, Orbach claims that women have been the target of a “ten billion dollar industry waits to remold bodies to the latest fashion” year after year (451-52).

In addition to this, Orbach gives us some background history on fashion and how media ads affected the thinking of those young ladies who lived in the 60’s and 70’s, where television started to be a mainstream along with magazines and radio. Orbach writes that in the 60’s, there were only three ways to “feel acceptable” within one’s society: to be skinny, flat chested and straight hair (451).

By the 70’s the fashion was the opposite. Clearly, this statement clarifies the historical example of the classic American culture, slammed by media ads in which women are bombarded with new fashion styles and new trends every year. The fact of the matter is that Orbach claims that being fat is a “culturally defined experience of womanhood” (449), however, she calls society to make a change in this issue in which women are constantly fighting a never ending war of overweight and obesity. Response After reading this essay I’ve found there are reasons as to why women in our society today overeat.

In terms of overeating, and the pressures society places on women, I agree that sometimes society place too much pressure on them to look or be a certain way. There are indeed some overweight woman who are perfectly healthy, and others who are not. Although, the issue comes when we try to impose what our idea of healthy is, or what it is supposed to look like from our on perspective onto them. This can drive people to depression, and all types of other bad habits like overeating. I also believe that Orbach, was correct when she stated that self –image, and self- consciousness, play a big role in this subject as well.

She states that by not living up to the standards placed by society, would essentially be deeming oneself as an outcast, which in today’s society is very true. Those who cannot/ do not keep up with the latest trend, look, and style are no longer considered to be “in” which is ridiculous. Women especially, should be able to be them despite what new trend comes about, how many more people become skinnier, or whatever the case may be. We should teach that being comfortable in one’s own skin is what is key, staying healthy, and then working one becoming a better you is what comes next.

This essay showed me that if one really took the time to think about it, being “fat” really could be looked at as a social disease that we ideally created and placed on them. I agree, that society, gender roles and the expectations that we place on women can be directly correlated with overeating and obesity. For me, obesity and overeating is something I never quite understood, nor took the time to really critically think about until now. I was skinny as a young girl; my weight was under one hundred pounds and therefore never having to think about being “fat”.

As I got older, I started to gain weight, reaching one hundred and thirty pounds, and then I started thinking “Wow! I’m fat”. Then I became pregnant and gained more weight, I was “HUGE” in my eyes. After giving birth I became obsessed with my weight and body image. I started to exercise and eat healthy to lose the weight; I felt pressure from society, family, and friends to lose the weight because I had always been so thin. I even went to the extreme of having lipo after I couldn’t lose the weight by eating right and exercise.

That period of my life was a dark and sad time for me; my family didn’t know about my depression, I was under so much pressure to look perfect! Orbach, also touches a subject that I kind of disagree with as she explains: “the relegation of women to the social roles of wife and mother has several significant consequences that contribute to the problem of fat” (450). The social roles have played an important role in the American culture, especially in women where it’s always the classic stay home mom, taking care of kids and the husband being the only provider.

Under these circumstances, perhaps, women don’t feel the necessity to present an ideal physical image once they are married, or to what she claims it’s a “response to the inequality of sexes” where women feel less valuable and they express some type of rebellion towards the stereotypes that society has created of “being fat” or impulsive eating disorder (448-49). Reason I don’t agree completely with this subject is because, I know many stay at home mom’s that do want to stay looking good, and feeling good, not only for them, but for their husband and children.

Overall, Susie Orbach’s article “Fat is a Feminist Issue” was a very good one. It teaches us that we should not imply our own beliefs of what the ideal woman should, or should not look like. While at the same time understanding that obesity and overeating are driven by something, some struggle, expectation, or pressure. This implies that would should not be so quick to say being “fat” is simply a choice that some individuals make and that, that is all there is to it, because there can be other factors. Works Cited

Did you know that the United States is the second fattest country in the world? At least 1 out of 5 American is consider obese. Experts estimate that annually, about 300,000 people die due to this epidemic. This is also the second leading cause of avoidable death in the nation. The leading causes that contribute to obesity are: eating excessively, getting insufficient exercise, and malnutrition. However, there are other secondary causes related to our culture that are not commonly mentioned.

Overeating is evidently one of the predominant causes.

America is one of the few countries that annually celebrates eating contests. An example of these competitions is the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating contest, which is held annually on July 4th in multiple locations. That is not the only eating competition scheduled annually; there are many other contests hosted by big companies across the nation. Events like these, demonstrate that eating is a hobby for Americans. Beyond being a hobby it is also an addiction for people.

Psychologists, estimate that seventy-five percent of excessive eating is caused by emotions. People feeling sad, lonely, depressed, bored, and frustrated find eating to be an immediate solution that can satisfy them.

What is evident about emotional eating is that it can cause undesirable weight gain. Furthermore, lack of exercise is another common factor for obesity, not only in America, but in the world. Physical inactivity occurs when a person does not exercise on a daily basis. In our nation the lack of exercise happens due to the rushed lifestyle that we live. Laziness is also a factor that contributes to inactivity; people prefer to spend thirty minutes watching TV rather than exercising. When getting jobs, creating a family, having to pay bills and studying simultaneously it is tough to split up the time adequately. Nevertheless, it’s not impossible to split up the time.

By doing cardiovascular exercises such as jogging, walking, biking or running for thirty minutes every day you will avoid physical inactivity and therefore reduce the probability of being obese. Another common exercise that could also contribute to create a healthy body is swimming. Besides leading to obesity, lack of exercise also causes many other diseases in the human body. Some of them are diabetes, which is a common disease in obese people, as well as high blood pressure.

In addition, malnutrition is also a leading cause of obesity. Individuals suffer from malnourishment when their diet does not meet the adequate requirements for proteins, carbohydrates, calories, etc. There are two different types of malnourishment. The first one is when people eat an excess of junk food exceeding the adequate diet, while the second type is the opposite, when the person is not eating enough food to reach the adequate requirements. This factor can be seen as a cultural issue due to the food composition in some countries.

A big number of United States citizens tend to eat fast food on a daily basis. It is clear that the diet obtained from a fast food is not the best one. Food from fast food restaurants barely has protein or fiber. It primarily consists of carbohydrates, fat, and empty calories. Therefore, fast food diet is not a good nutrition source. Another thing that influences malnutrition is alcohol consumption.

Even though the United States is not at the top of the list of per capita alcohol consumption, the nation has a decent amount of people that drink alcohol on a weekly or even daily basis. Alcohol is not bad when it is consume in moderation, but the problem is that many people consume it excessively and it logically affects the nutrition and health of a person. After analyzing the main causes of obesity it is evident that obesity is an avoidable disease.

There are many habits that can contribute to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Eating moderately is essential to achieve that healthy lifestyle. Exercising on a daily basis is also vital for a healthy body. The most important habit is adopting a healthy diet that could meet the adequate requirements in terms of nutrition needs. United States could decrease its obesity rate if all these causes are modified. There’s no doubt that it takes dedication to improve one’s health, but at the end of the day it’s worth it.

The 3-day diet analysis was very interesting to me, and has given me some very useful and challenging information pertaining to my health. I know I do not have the healthiest eating habits, and after using the SuperTracker I plan to do my best at changing my diet. My current eating habits are not very bad, but not very good or healthy. I do not eat breakfast, but when I do I eat breakfast I eat food that is for lunch or dinner.

I know that is not good, but eating some breakfast food makes me feel sick. Honestly, I like to eat breakfast food at night. Lately, I have not wanted to eat breakfast at all.

Problems with My Former Diet

So when lunch time comes around I am starving and I sometimes eat more than I should. I also stuff myself when I am eating. I have this mentality that I should eat everything on my plate, even when I am full.

The recommendations I received from the SuperTracker pertaining to my servings from each food group were mostly under the serving size. I received a good report in the protein category. I love to eat meat. The vegetable category was okay in some areas, but needs improvement. I also need to improve in the calorie area. Apparently, I was under my 1800 calories, but the empty calories I was over the limit.

As I mentioned before my eating habits are not good at all. I can adjust my diet by eating the appropriate nutrients. I need to eat more fruits because my results were not good in that category. I can add some whole fruits as a snack rather than eating Pringles for a snack. My dairy category was not as good either. I must admit that I do not drink milk or eat ice cream at all. I can’t tolerate lactose and I stay away from dairy products. My vegetable consumption is not bad; however, I need to eat at least 11/2 cup(s) of dark green vegetables, and 6 cup(s) starchy vegetables weekly.

Recommendations for Healthier Diet

The grains nutrients showed that I should eat 6 ounce(s), 3 ounce(s) of whole grains, and 3 ounce(s) of refined grains. My report showed I was under in that category as well. The six classes of nutrients are carbohydrates, lipids, water, proteins, minerals, and vitamins. My overall intake of nutrients raised a red flag towards my health when I saw that my sodium intake is over the consumption amount. I suffer from hypertension and I need to make sure I take my consumption on certain foods seriously. I see now that I have really put myself in danger of having a stroke. I also know that I should improve my vitamin intake as well.

I suffer from low iron, and I have to take three iron pills a day. I know if I were to eat the appropriate minerals that contain iron then I probably wouldn’t have to take three iron pills a day. Reviewing my results from the 3-day diet analysis really helped me improve my eating habits. The number one thing I improved was the sodium. I learned to decrease how much salt I was eating. I printed out the food groups and calorie intake chart, so I could see how to measure my servings. When I go grocery shopping I take my list of foods that I got off the 3-day diet analysis, so I can know what foods are healthy for me.

How Good Diet Helps to Improve My Health

I have started to eat less at the fast food restaurants, and started packing my lunch to take to work. That has helped me save money as well. I have added some exercising to my diet plan too. I try to exercise at least three to four times a week. I have become an older woman and I realize that eating healthy and exercising is a very important role in my life. Since I have been diagnosed with hypertension, I see that my health is not to be taken lightly. This assignment has opened my eyes and helped me understand that my body needs to be taken care of to the fullest.
