DNP

According to Duke University’s School of Nursing website, the comparison between a DNP and PHD in nursing is a simple one. The DNP is a doctorate of nursing practice whereas the PHd is a doctorate of research. The DNP is focused on interpreting research for the purposes of using those research findings in the clinical setting to benefit patients and staff who may work underneath them. The PHd is more focused on preparing the student to conduct research on their own and prepare that research in a way that It can be used by those who work in the clinical setting (Duke University School of Nursing, 2018).

If I were to ever continue on to the doctorate level, my focus would be the DNP route. There have been many changes in my preferences as I have moved through my short career in the medical field but I can say with the utmost confidence that I love patient interaction. The DNP being a more focused on clinical application is the route that would allow me to continue doing what I love and working with the patients. I do see that research is extremely important in the ever changing medical field and I am so grateful for those who put in that kind of work however, I just don’t see myself ever looking for that kind of work.

comment2

At its most basic, the difference between a PhD and and DNP in nursing is one researches and the other implements. Those who pursue a PhD in nursing will focus on new knowledge development, research, testing, and information dissemination. They will lead forays into experimentation, analysis, and potential application. Essentially these individuals are nurse scientists who are more research focused than they are patient face-time focused. Individuals who pursue a DNP will be challenged to implement the research of many—including PhD nurses—while working in a clinical setting. They are responsible for the delivery of advanced health care and choose to have direct patient contact.

If choosing between the two of these options, I would go for the DNP. I can certainly respect research and the impact it has on daily life but it’s not something I enjoy. I much prefer seeing the results on research implementation and prefer the direct application of ideas.

What do you think would be an intervention to help decrease the amount of new HIV interventions?.

Human immunodeficiency virus

Human immunodeficiency virus or HIV is a virus that is transmitted through body fluids through sexual contact, needle sharing, as well as mother to baby. The virus attacks the immune system and causes the CD4 cells, what helps fight infections, to be low (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). There have been great strides made, since the first diagnoses in the early 1980s, when it comes to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (National Prevention Information Network, 2017). The ELISA or the rapid HIV test is used to test someone for HIV. If the individual is positive, a confirmation test called the Western Blot test is done to confirm these results (Lawrence & Ashely, 2018). It is mandatory that all practitioners and laboratories report positive results to the local or state health department. The state department will then send this information to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (Hartog, 2013). When treated with the correct antiretroviral therapy (ART) patients can remain in the clinical latency phase for decades and live a normal life and are less likely to infect others at this stage (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). While there has been a national decrease of new HIV cases, Florida is seeing an increase in new HIV cases (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2017). For family nurse practitioners mainly seeing patients in the clinic setting, it is important that prevention is key and, education and screening needs to be the focus to help reduce the new cases of HIV. While it is not possible to prevent all cases of new HIV, we must make sure that individuals that are infected with HIV have the resources to receive their ART regimen and take it correctly.

What do you think would be an intervention to help decrease the amount of new HIV interventions?
