Humor can be one of the most effective tools to use with persuasion, as it can provide many benefits with very little cost or drawback. Some of the benefits of using humor to communicate an argument include increased attention span, an overall more enjoyable reading experience, not to mention the comfortable environment comedy will give for the writer to communicate their ideas. Enter humor columnist Dave Barry and his essay, “Road Warrior,” which introduces the quality of road rage that is said affect the American public today, and he also sheds a humorous light on how easily people are angered.

His use of various techniques in his writing makes his approach to the problem of road rage effective, because humor can make something that is tedious become interesting. The techniques he utilizes include the use of metaphors, rhetorical questions (a figure of speech in the form of a question without the expectation of a reply), capitalized words, sarcasm (a sharp, bitter, or cutting remark; or a bitter taunt), and labeling.

Barry’s use of humor in his writing contributed greatly to the overall effectiveness of the essay.

Through the use of humor, Barry not only contributes to the overall funny tone of the essay, but he sheds a humorous light on a rather tense subject. Road rage is a disease that has been affecting motorists since the time when horsepower compared the power of vehicles to that of the horse. People have been known to express anger towards various situations in many different ways, most commonly being “flipping the bird. ” First, road rage can cause stress while someone travels, which would in turn create health problems.

Secondly, road rage can be deadly whether a person is the victim or the offender, as some accidents are known to have been caused by chancy driving due to road rage. Essentially, road rage is an important quality to try to avoid in today’s society for those two very important reasons, and more. The first reason why Barry’s essay was effective is his use of metaphors. Barry uses metaphors throughout the essay to describe the various types of anger he experiences in daily life. For example, in paragraph four, Barry compares the size of Miami driver’s brains to cashews when he is introducing Miami as the Inappropriate Lane Driving Capital of the World,” due to “being tailgated and occasionally bumped from behind by testosterone driven youth. ”

Barry will also use a metaphor when he compares the speed that some motorists travel in the “fast lane” to that of diseased livestock when describing slower travelling Miami drivers who travel in the left hand lane or the “fast lane. ” Another reason why Barry’s essay is effective is his use of rhetorical questions and capitalization of key words. During his description of “Parking Lot Rage,” he asks “What the hell are they doing in there? when describing the times that he would look for a parking spot, and wait for somebody to vacate theirs. He goes on to describe instances where “nobody ever signals or yields, and people are constantly cutting us off,” during his description of the problem of youth with aggressive driving habits he also asks “After a while we start to feel some rage, OK? You got a problem with that, mister news media opinion-maker? ” These questions and capitalized words are Barry’s own way of putting emphasis on certain points, which contributes a unique touch to the essay.

A third reason why Barry’s essay was effective is Barry’s use of sarcasm in his writing. His use of sarcasm gives a sense of playfulness, which skillfully keeps true to his underlying meaning. For example, in paragraph six, Barry refers to the left hand lane as a public recreational area when he is talking about drivers that will travel slowly in the left lane. Barry is also sarcastic while he is describing the driver training youth receive in Miami, stating “we are being tailgated and occasionally bumped from behind by testosterone driven youths who got their driver training from watching the space-fighter battle scenes in Star Wars.

He is being sarcastic about the fact that youth in Miami get their driver training from watching space-fighter battle scenes in Star Wars. Lastly, another reason why Barry’s essay is effective is his coining of his own terms when labeling the various events that upset him in his daily life. Such as, in paragraph six, Barry labels Miami as the “Inappropriate Lane Driving Capital Of The World,” while speaking about the slower travelling motorists that stay in the left lane.

Barry also comes up with a name for another upsetting occurrence he experiences, which he refers to as “way too many product choices rage” when describing the difficulty of having so many options to choose from when shopping for grocery items. In conclusion, Barry deftly uses various techniques to get his ideas across, including metaphors, rhetorical questions, capitalized words, sarcasm, labeling, and humor; which not only contributes to the overall funny tone of the essay, but he is able to shed a humorous light on a rather tense subject.

All it takes is a little sense of humor. It is indeed among the simplest and noblest answers that one can find as a cure to so many disorders and distresses in this world. A small laugh, a chuckle, a giggle – quite unimpressive but, yes, this is the antidote to it all. Ever wonder how lighter we feel just by watching playful children spend countless hours laughing over a silly cartoon TV show till they roll over? Or how it feels good to laugh at oneself when we try to cope from an embarrassing situation? It is simply humor.

So what is humor, really?

Is it a learned trait or an inevitably innate characteristic of an individual? And what pain or stress reliever does it comprise of? Humor is a very personal yet in a way a contagious form of therapy. Humor is the plain capability of laughing at oneself and of the smallest and simplest amusing things occurring in one’s environment.

It is practically one’s humility in accepting one’s silliness and imperfections. Humor – often portrayed through laughter – is also the art of turning negative circumstances to more positive ones.

It is looking beyond the disappointments and all other forms of “stop”/ “halt” signs to being happy. Humor is broadly depicted in three major aspects of an individual – physically, emotionally and socially. To further illustrate the impact of humor & laughter to the physical and overall health conditions of a person; let’s take for an example two students from the university. One is “The Gifted Child”, a beautiful diligent student but very stingy should you ask for a smile. The other is the cheerleader, the “Ms Congeniality” of the batch, although not as gorgeous as the other.

Placing these two personas in context, one may see who stands out in the crowd with a healthier disposition. In an instant, beauty and brains may behold the eyes of one person, as with the Gifted Child. However, more than anything else, humor and laughter can be as far as contagious than any form of virus in this world, as it can cause a domino effect of wellness, of joy and amusement, of a deep sense of appreciation in the simplest of things (Helpguide. org, 2007). This is the appeal projected by Ms.

Congeniality to the people around her, despite her below-average looks. Her great sense of humor enabled her to radiate her inner beauty. From this illustration, it is also suggested that these individuals are more likely the stress-free types. Happy people are pleasing to look at and enjoy taking care of themselves, regardless of his status in the society. They wake up in the morning with gusto and anticipation for the day. They keep their day busy with healthy and productive things. And they end their day with a smile on their face.

Scientifically, humor and laughter activates the chemistry of the body to live and increases one’s capacity to fight diseases (Helpguide. org, 2007). This will to survive is hyped-up in the mind of the person. When he understands that it is not bad after all to be below the average standards of society’s acceptable physical attributes, then he will continue to take care of himself. A distressed person would rather slouch and slump at one corner, and wallow in self-pity than fight back. The mind plays a crucial role in keeping one’s humor intact and healthy.

Nevertheless, it is also important to note that even though an open mind and an optimistic attitude will bring about the best in one’s health, we wary about the promise of complete cures through “positive thinking. ” On the other hand one should remember thataA cure may be beyond your reach, but a joyful mind is not (Woolston, 2000). Having a bit of humor can also add spice to one’s life. Gifted Child may take a grade B in her Algebra as upsetting as ever. But Ms. Congeniality, with her humor and wits, can turn a sloppy performance in a cheerleading competition to a learning opportunity for her entire team.

It is in this disposition that one’s humor and laughter is manifested through one’s emotional stability. The tendency for us to succumb to feelings of depression and helplessness are decreased if we are able to laugh at what is troubling us. Through humor, we are given a new and more sensible perspective on our problems (Holistic Nursing Practice, 1996). We become aware that life does not stop there. Laughter fuels one’s determination of moving forward, but not ignoring the fact that we did commit a mistake – a mistake we should learn from.

Humor is also related to subjective well-being. Subjective well-being, as the term indicates, is primarily concerned with the person’s subjective judgment of his or her well-being (Diener et al. , 1999). Because the standards of self-evaluation are different to the individual, evaluating whether one’s life as a whole is satisfying or not, can be a challenging cognitive task to the individual. Diener and Fujita (1995) observe that subjective well-being comprises people’s evaluation, both affective and cognitive, of their lives. According to Veenhoven (2000),Subjective well-being is related to the common term “happiness,” and it can range from depression to elation.

It can have both “affective” aspects (I feel good about my life) and cognitive aspects (I think that the various aspects of my life, i. e. , family, job, education etc. , are satisfactory). This construct is related to the individual’s capacity to inject humor into his life! According to a study dated February 2005 released by Texas A&M University, humor may significantly increase a person’s level of hope, which, in turn, could help an individual better cope with obstacles and stress.

Researchers believe that the positive emotion of hope generated by humor, further stimulates thought processes and increases an individual’s ability to solve problems creatively (AVMA Group, 2005). Handling stress is all in the mind, and humor shifts the ways in which we think. It is not situations that generate our stress, it is how we interpret the meaning of the situations happening. Humor adjusts the meaning of an event so that it is not so overwhelming. Another thumbs-up factor for humor on its impact on health! Finally, Ms. Congeniality and Gifted Child emanate a different kind of effect on people.

Without humor and laughter, intimidation or insecurities may settle in – factors again contributing to dilapidating health conditions. Humor helps people connect with one another in a comfortable manner. Groups of people enjoy sharing and experiencing humor together, coupled with more talk, touch and eye contact (AVMA Group, 2005). We have very powerful minds that what is entertained, is reflected as the person’s energy towards others and towards the world. The happy person keeps on radiating this aura of “feel-good” which attracts people. Human relationships benefit from humor and laughter.

It bonds ties, reaches out to the loneliest inner self, and starts the healing process. Friendships, marriages, business partnerships, clans – are made unwavering when humor and laughter are present (AVMA Group, 2005). All these in mind, it is no wonder that laughter is the best medicine. It’s the most inexpensive therapy for people of all ages, across cultures, beyond boundaries. It is the pain-reliever available over-the-counter, even over-any store in this world. Life is full of challenges. Truth is, some things would not really change overnight despite our positive outlook over things.

But it would make a total difference in taking this road of life, if we at least wear a smile on our face, survive, and religiously take this pill called Humor.

My friend and I once took our snack at a quiet corner in the college cafeteria when he shared to me an experience he had while volunteering in a home for the elderly. He said that one time a hearing impaired grandma had her friend, who was then also deaf with old age, for a visit. Once left by the caregiver, the two old women had a conversation. The grandma had been trying to squeeze a decent tune from her guitar for an hour.

Her deaf friend asked, “Is that a guitar? ” Grandma replied loudly, “No, it’s a guitar! ” Her deaf friend then nodded and said matter-of-factly, “Oh, I thought it was a guitar.

” Sales ladies sometimes astound me and I have been wondering why some of them are hired in the first place. I was at Wal-Mart one evening quite in a hurry to find a CD of Beethoven for an assignment in class. I had been scouring the record section but I seemed to miss the classical music section.

So I asked the saleslady nearest to me, “Can you please direct me to the classical music section please? ” She then accompanied me to a tiny corner of the records section devoted to classical music but I could not find the Beethoven selection that I wanted.

I then asked her, “Do you have more Beethoven? ” The saleslady’s brows furrowed a tad bit despite her wide smile. Perhaps sensing that I was about to be puzzled with her look she broke into a delightful smile and urged me to wait while she disappeared. She came back with a Beethoven CD indeed but still it did not contain the piece I was looking for. I asked if she has any more in stock somewhere. She replied with an all-knowing enthusiastic demeanor, “Sir, that is his latest CD. He just released it a month ago. ” I was speechless and managed to utter, “He did?

These invaluable qualities of humor has made it an important tool for the organizations towards enhancing the productivity and a happy ambience.

However, there is no dearth of the supporters of the opposite school, which believes that workplace humor is a bane to productivity.

This essay thus probes a few nuances of Workplace Humor (WHS), before reaching to a conclusion based on discussion. 2. WHERE IT COMES FROM? The core of humor forms with human desire to escape from monotony, which becomes evident, when something out of proportion generates fun amongst them. This also has meat in its argument; because, though a joke should not be thrown and taken in seriously, there cannot be any yardstick of harmlessness, by which one could filter his/her joke. Collinson points at another situation that speaks of ‘radical functionalism’, when it works as a safety-valve by giving vent to the pent-up discontent of someone or a group. This also has a merit of its own, especially when the canvas of operation is larger than ordinary. On the other hand, there are examples of extreme stances taken against humor as well – where it was totally banned, and carried severe punishment with its violation. Alas!

This also had faced opposition from other institutions, like medieval Catholicism, which took a middle-of-the-road policy to admit both humor and seriousness in the practice. In the modern day situations, where one experiences flurry of jokes through every possible medium, the debate on its positive and negative side of workplace humor stands just where it has been for years, where one group of organizations advocating in favor of workplace humor to ease the stress and increase the productivity, while the its counterpart is stressing on developing pure work ethics that would solely focused on the development of the organization.

4. CONCLUSION Collinson’s article serves as a great eye opener for someone who wants to analyze humor. Accordingly it clearly shows that humor is a broad based concept and can change its colors in the hands of its applicators. An applicator is essentially a communicator, who delivers his/her message to get a desired feedback. In that perspective humor is just another medium of message; where it can turn out as a ‘healthy insanity’, or a ‘poisoned arrow’.

This is evident in the examples cited above, where under different social situations the applicators either converted humor as a weapon or used as a window to breathe fresh air. Thus, this essay concludes with the opinion that the merit and demerit of workplace humor would remain constant, while catering to the wills of its users. So today I would like to share a part of what I have read and learned by explaining what is laughter, the benefit of laughter and how to make more laughter.

First of all, laughter is not the same as humor. Laughter is the physiological response to humor. Laughter consists of two parts — a set of gestures and the production of a sound. When we laugh, the brain pressures us to conduct both those activities simultaneously. When we laugh heartily, changes occur in many parts of the body, even the arm, leg and trunk muscles.

Laughter is a great thing – that is why we have all heard the saying “laughter is the best medicine”. I am sure you are wondering how laughter can affect us. We’ve long known that the ability to laugh is helpful to those coping with major illness and the stress of life’s problems. But researchers are now saying laughter can do a lot more — it can basically bring balance to all components of the immune system which help us fight off disease. As, I mentioned earlier, laughter can reduces level of certain stress hormones.

In doing this, laughter provides a safety valve that shuts off the flow of stress hormones and the fight or flight compound that swing into action in our bodies when we experience stress or anger. These stress hormone supress the immune system, increase the number of platelet and raise blood pressure. Laughter can be a body workout. What may surprise you even more is the fact that researchers estimate that laughing 100 times is equal to 10 minutes on the rowing machine or 15 minutes on an exercise bike.

Laughing can be a total body workout! When we laugh, blood pressure is lowered, and there is an increase in vascular blood flow and in oxygenation of the blood, which further assists healing. Laughter also gives your diaphragm and abdominal respiratory, facial, leg and back muscles a workout. That’s why you often feel exhausted after a long bout of laughter. The psychological benefits of humor are quite amazing, according to doctors and nurses who are members of the American Association for Therapeutic Humor.

People often store negative emotions, such as anger, sadness and fear, rather than expressing them. Laughter provides a way for these emotions to be harmlessly released. Laughter is cathartic. That’s why some people who are upset or stressed out go to a funny movie or a comedy club, so they can laugh the negative emotions away (these negative emotions, when held inside, can cause biochemical changes that can affect our bodies). Some of us do not know how to laughter. So there are some tips to produce more laughter.

There are a few tips for how to bring more laughter in your life. First, you can watch comedies. We all have different tastes, so we all need to identify the sort of comedies that are most likely to make us laugh. Second, spend time with friends that can make you laugh. We all know people that when we are around them we just feel happy and playful. Spend more time with them. Thirdly, take life less seriously. It is so easy to get caught in the habit of thinking we have to take things seriously.

But generally speaking, the more serious we are about our problems, the more serious they become. People will often say, one day we will look back on this and laugh. Why not just laugh now! As we have seen, laughter can affect us in many ways. I learned a lot about myself and in process, learned a lot about the value of laughter. After experiencing these laughter-inducing moments first hand, I know there are great benefits to them. Laughter offer us a chance of escape, even for a few moments from the past and the future.
