Select an area of controversy within the realm of nutrition and health. The goal of this research and
presentation is to analyze a current controversy within nutrition, discuss at least two sides/viewpoints
on the issue and demonstrate the political, clinical, cultural, social and ethical factors and forces that
shape nutrition guidelines and recommendations. Be sure to address the controversies, viewpoints
and factors influencing these different sides and NOT just present about your topic in general.Presentations should summarize the information you research in your own words
(paraphrase, do NOT copy direct sentences from your references) with appropriately cited
references in APA-format cited on each slide and with a reference list at the end including at
least 8 professional sources.Be sure to include
at least 4 professional peer-reviewed journal articles as sources as well as additional credible

Annotated Bibliography

Purpose:

For this project, you will write an annotated bibliography. Your purpose in writing this is three-fold: to organize and keep track of the sources you have found on your topic, to better understand the relationships among different perspectives on the topic, and to demonstrate knowledge of the existing research about it.

Topic:

The topic of your annotated bibliography will be the issue you chose to write about for your final research project (It may be a controversy, a new development, a current event, breakthrough, etc.) More specifically, you will choose sources to include in your annotated bibliography that will help you answer your research question, which should be stated clearly and explained in an introduction to your AB.

Criteria:

In your AB, you should include:

An introduction that clearly states your research question and describes why your topic is controversial (that is, why it is an issue in the field).

5 sources organized alphabetically.

At least 3 of these must be scholarly, peer-reviewed sources.

One source must contain quantitative data, and your understanding of this data must be reflected in your annotated entry.

You may not use unsigned web sources unless you specifically have your instructor’s approval for them.

As you select your sources, make sure you have a variety. For example, you should not have multiple sources by the same author or multiple sources published by the same magazine or journal.

An annotation for each source that includes:

A citation and link (URL) to your source

A summary of the source that includes just the main points that are relevant to your research topic/question.

Information about the author that proves it is a credible source.

An indication of what this source brings to your annotated bibliography that is unique, and how it connects to the other sources.

A consistent documentation style – whatever style your field uses (APA, MLA)

1. The problem facing Scott Deeter and his company Ventria is that CRC advisory board and California Secretary of Agriculture is not being convinced to allow Ventria start planting genetically modified Rice in California. Even though Deeter and his staff offered numerous concessions to address the concerns of rice farmers and other parties involved, but they still could not get an approval for their project. Deeter and his company Ventria is also having the possible issue of maintaining trust of their sponsors and stake holders.

The company missed two planting seasons and is not making any profit which doesn’t make investors happy, and could eventually lead them to withdraw their capital and invest in other company’s and projects.

2. Members of the company’s board and their organizations collectively provided 85% of the company’s financing. That includes, Dr. Rodriguez the founder, cofounders of Chiron Corp. Dr. William Rutter and Dr. Pablo Valenzuela, William Rutter who is an attorney and venture capitalist, Ron Vogel the president of Great Western Malting and bio-entrepreneur Dr.

Roberto Crea. Also, Thomas Urban, Melvin Booth and David Dwyer joined later.

3.There could be different scenarios: First: stakeholders could get impatient about pouring money in a company that will never see the light of success because of the huge amount of opposition. Second: The board members could eventually decide to move their company outside of California, or maybe moving the planting of Rice fields at least to be outside of CRC regulations.

4. If Ventria decided to employ a political action strategy then I believe they should focus on proving enough research and guarantees that their project will not have the negative bad effect on other Rice crops or humans. They could also argue that their project is very beneficial to the state of california bring in new revenue and state tax. Also they could present the idea that their project will provide many job opportunities and decrease unemployment in the state.

5. The company could have the ultimate option of moving it’s planting operations to outside of California where there are no Rice fields and proper climate.

6. I think Ventria should investigate the possibility of moving the company outside of california and check if they would be able to gain enough profit as they were initially anticipating. I believe the there are other states with lenient laws that would not mind having Ventria operations and Rice fields. The average salaries are usually lower in other states than in California which could also play to their advantage.

Background Information

Today there are many complaints over the politicization of science. Many people believe politics should not play a role in science, but once government funds science, the funding decisions become political. In most social institutions, disagreements are settled by debate. Science in contrast, uses experiments to prove or disprove theories. Science is testable, and is self-proving. If a better explanation for a phenomenon is found, it will replace other explanations. This is why careful distinctions must be made between Frontier Science, Consensus Science, and Junk Science.

Many difficult controversies surround the environmental problems we face in the world today. Problems include: Air and water pollution, global warming, species and ecosystem biodiversity, energy, hazardous waste, population, and food supply issues. Politics control the financing of scientific research and development to help solve these issues. In politics passion wins over logic.

Science is not politics and cannot be debated in the same way politics are. Mixing politics with science produces bad science. Government efforts to fund research interfere with the maintenance of high scientific standards. The current Congress consists of 535 members. Of these members, 7 (1.3%), are scientists, and 21 others are healthcare professionals.
