Some foreign film ideas (you may need to get a film subscription service such as FilmStruck (which you can get on a trial basis for free). Some of the following are only available for rent. You are not required to spend any additional money on this course and, which is why you have the option to write on an international news story using the free resources listed above. If you do choose to view a film, I would recommend looking up the synopsis of the movie you are interested in in order to see if the film would appeal to you and if there are any language, violence, nudity or sexual elements you may want to be prepared for. I have listed where the films are streaming as of May 20, 2018.
Mother (Korea) Free on Netflix, For rent on
Amazon. A woman embarks on an obsessive quest to clear her son’s name of
murder.
The Wailing (Korea) Free on Netflix. A stranger arrives in a little village
and soon after a mysterious sickness starts spreading. A policeman is drawn
into the incident and is forced to solve the mystery in order to save his
daughter.
Forgive Us Our Debts (Italy). Free on Netflix. A man struggling under
the crushing weight of debt must work as a tax collector to pay off his
creditors.
He Even Has Your Eyes (France) Free on Netflix. When French-African
couple Paul and Sali discover the longed-for baby they are about to adopt is
white, family chaos and confrontation ensue.
The Square (Egypt) Free on Netflix. The Square is an immersive experience,
transporting the viewer deeply into the intense emotional drama and personal
stories behind the news. It is the inspirational story of young people claiming
their rights, struggling through multiple forces: from a brutal army
dictatorship willing to crush protesters with military tanks, to a corrupt
Muslim Brotherhood using mosques to manipulate voters.
The Salesman (Iran) Amazon Prime. Academy Award Winner for
Best Foreign Language Film. Forced out of their apartment due to dangerous
works on a neighboring building, Emad and Rana move into a new flat in the
center of Tehran. An incident linked to the previous tenant will dramatically
change the young couple’s life. The Salesman is an Amazon Original Movie.
Persian language film with English subtitles.
Frantz (German). Amazon Prime. In a small German town in the
immediate aftermath of WWI, Anna (Paula Beer) grieves for her late fiancé,
Frantz. When she encounters a mysterious young Frenchman (Pierre Niney) laying
flowers at Frantz’s grave, Anna welcomes him into her life and their shared
connection to Frantz propels a haunting and romantic tale of guilt and
forgiveness in the shadow of war.
The Innocents (France). Amazon Prime. Poland, December 1945: World War
II has just ended and Red Cross nurse Mathilde is wrapping up her work when a
panicked nun arrives to beckon her back to the convent, where she finds a
shocking scene: several holy sisters in advanced stages of pregnancy. Facing a
crisis of faith, the nuns turn to non-believer Mathilde as their beliefs and traditions
clash with their harsh new realities.
Train to Busan (Korea) Free on Netflix, for rent on Amazon.
TRAIN TO BUSAN is a harrowing zombie horror-thriller that follows a group of
terrified passengers fighting their way through a countrywide viral outbreak,
trapped on a suspicion-filled, blood-drenched bullet train ride to the Safe
Zone…which may or may not still be there.
Raw (France)
Free on Netflix. For rent on Amazon. Desperate to fit in during the first week
of school, Justine strays from her principles and faces the unexpected
consequences of her actions as her true self emerges.
Under the Shadow (Iran) Free on Netflix, for rent on Amazon.
Living amidst the chaos of the Iran-Iraq war, Shideh is left alone to protect
her young daughter, Dorsa. When a missile hits their apartment building but
fails to explode, Shideh learns from a superstitious neighbor that the cursed
missile might have brought in djinns – malevolent spirits that travel on the
wind.
Force Majeure (Sweden). For rent on Amazon, Available on
Sundance Channel (7-day free trial). A wickedly funny psychodrama of a model
Swedish family–Tomas, his wife and their children– on a skiing holiday. An
avalanche suddenly bears down on them. Tomas makes a decision that leaves him
struggling to reclaim his role as family patriarch.
A Separation (Iran).For rent on Amazon.A
SEPARATION is a compelling drama about the dissolution of a marriage and
explores a married couple who are faced with a difficult decision, to improve
the life of their child by moving to another country or to stay in Iran and
look after a deteriorating parent who has Alzheimers.
Let the Right One In (Sweden) For rent on Amazon. Lonely, 12-year-old Oskar
is regularly bullied by his stronger classmates. A new friendship develops when
Eli, a pale, serious young girl who only comes out at night, moves in next
door.
Paradise Now (Palestine) For rent on Amazon. “PARADISE
NOW” follows two Palestinian childhood friends who have been recruited for
a strike on Tel Aviv and focuses on their last days together.
Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter…and Spring (Korea) For rent on Amazon. Award-winning Korean
writer/director/editor Kim Ki-Duk uses the symbology of the passing seasons to
tell this story of a young Buddhist monk’s evolution from Innocence to Love,
Evil to Enlightenment, and ultimately to Rebirth.
Maria Full of Grace (Colombia) on HBO. A 17-year-old Colombian girl
in search of adventure and a better life elects to become a ‘mule’ for
international drug smugglers.
Graduation (Romania). Free on Netflix, For rent on Amazon. Acclaimed
filmmaker Cristian Mungiu returns with this searing human saga about a father
driven to extremes in order to protect his daughter’s future. Winner Best
Director, Cannes
Run, Lola, Run (Germany). For rent on Amazon. The international
runaway box-office smash! Lola has 20 minutes to raise 100,000 marks, or her
boyfriend is history.
The Hunt (Denmark) (English Subtitled) The Hunt is a disturbing depiction
of how a lie is taken as truth when gossip, doubt and malice are allowed to
flourish and ignite a witch-hunt that soon threatens to destroy an innocent
man’s life.
