APA 7th edition is the required citation and formatting standard across Ashworth’s degree programs for written assignments and research papers. Most Ashworth students have had no formal training in APA format — and the difference between APA 6 and APA 7 catches even students with previous experience. Here is what Ashworth instructors check and where errors most commonly occur.
Student Paper Format (APA 7)
APA 7th edition eliminated the running head from student papers — a rule change from APA 6 that still trips up many students. The title page now requires course name, instructor name, institution name, and assignment due date. Abstract sections are optional unless your instructor specifically requires one. Accepted fonts include 11-point Calibri, 11-point Arial, or 12-point Times New Roman. Page numbers appear in the top-right header only. In-Text Citations & Reference Lists
APA 7 changed three-or-more-author citations — all now use “et al.” from the very first citation (APA 6 only applied et al. after the first full citation). DOIs are now formatted as hyperlinks beginning with https://doi.org/ not plain text. Reference list entries differ substantially by source type: journal articles require volume, issue, page range, and DOI; books require publisher and location (city no longer required in APA 7); websites require a retrieval URL and — for time-sensitive content only — a retrieval date. Headings, Numbers & Bias-Free Language
APA 7 revised heading levels: Level 1 is centred bold title case; Level 2 is flush left bold title case; Level 3 is flush left bold italic title case. Number conventions require spelling out one through nine and using numerals for 10 and above, with specific exceptions for statistics, units of measurement, and ages. APA 7 also expanded guidance on bias-free language covering gender, race, disability, and age terminology.
