Move 1 — Read across the top level only. Read every descriptor in the highest performance column. This is your target: a complete picture of what excellent work looks like across every dimension.

“Structure” vs “Organisation”

What “Developed,” “Sustained,” and “Integrated” Actually Mean in Practice
Three words appear in rubric descriptors more frequently than almost any others, and each has a specific meaning in the context of academic assessment that differs from its everyday usage.
“Developed” — Not Mentioned, Not Defined, Not Demonstrated
In rubric language, a “developed” argument, idea, or analysis is one that has been extended and elaborated beyond its initial statement. A thesis is developed when it appears not just in the introduction but is progressively refined and complicated as the paper unfolds — the paper does not just assert the thesis and then illustrate it, it builds on it. “Sustained” — Present Throughout, Not Only at the Beginning
A “sustained” argument is one that is maintained and visible from introduction to conclusion — not one that makes a strong opening and then drifts into description. A “sustained” analytical stance is one that applies the same critical lens throughout the paper, not one that analyses the first source carefully and summarises the rest. “Sustained focus” in an organisation criterion means that each section of the paper contributes to the same central purpose — there are no detours into tangentially related content that the introduction did not anticipate. Sustained is the criterion that punishes papers that start strongly and then lose their thread.
“Integrated” — Connected to Your Argument, Not Appended to It
Evidence or material is “integrated” when it is woven into your own analytical prose — introduced, quoted or paraphrased, and then explicitly connected to the argument you are making. Material is not integrated when it is cited without analysis (“According to Smith, X. According to Jones, Y.”), when it is dropped into a paragraph without a signal phrase, or when it is quoted at length and left for the reader to interpret. Integration requires that every piece of external material be explicitly connected by your own words to the specific claim it supports. Descriptor language distinguishes between “uses evidence” (lower levels) and “integrates evidence” (higher levels) precisely because the latter demands the analytic connection that the former merely requires the presence of evidence.
Vague Language in Rubrics and How to Decode It
Every rubric contains evaluative adjectives — words like “sophisticated,” “adequate,” “limited,” “thorough,” “clear,” and “appropriate” — that appear to describe quality but resist straightforward interpretation in isolation. These words are not mistakes: they are intentional, because rubrics must describe standards that apply across a range of student responses that cannot be fully anticipated in advance. But they require active interpretation rather than passive acceptance. The question is not what “sophisticated” means in the abstract, but what it means in this rubric, for this criterion, relative to the other levels in the same row.
Looking up “sophisticated” in a dictionary will not tell you what the rubric means by it. Rubric descriptors use evaluative adjectives relationally — their meaning is defined by what distinguishes them from the descriptor in the cell immediately below in the same criterion row. “Sophisticated” means: whatever quality is present in the top-level descriptor that is absent from the credit-level descriptor for the same criterion. Read the two adjacent descriptors side by side and identify what is different. That difference is the operational definition of “sophisticated” in this rubric for this criterion. This relational reading is the only reliable method for decoding vague descriptor language — and it requires the full rubric to work, not just the cell you are focused on.
Criterion Weighting and Mark Distribution: Where to Focus Your Effort
Not all rubric criteria contribute equally to your final grade. When a rubric includes explicit weighting — percentages, points, or marks allocated per criterion — that distribution tells you precisely where to concentrate your planning, drafting, and revision energy. If your rubric does not show explicit weights and the assignment instructions do not specify them, ask your instructor which criteria they consider most central before you begin drafting. Most instructors are willing to answer this question and many will tell you more than you expected. For rubric criteria that include “transitions” or “logical flow,” the transitions themselves are the evidence of meeting that criterion — not the content of the sections they connect. A well-organised paper where sections are logically sequenced but not explicitly connected by linking language will be marked lower on organisation than the same sequence with clear transitional sentences that name the argumentative logic of the progression.
Evidence Integration Check
Each time you cite a source, check the evidence use criterion. Ask: have I introduced this evidence (signal phrase), quoted or paraphrased it precisely, and then explicitly analysed what it contributes to my specific argument? Read each written comment and identify which criterion it belongs to. Comments that address argument, claims, or thesis belong to the argument criterion. Comments that address quotation use, source integration, or evidence belong to the evidence criterion.
