Write an essay that reflects on your work this term through the lens of James Paul Gee’s concept of “semiotic domains.”.

Paper Three

If we think first in terms of semiotic domains and not in terms of reading and writing as traditionally conceived, we can say that people are (or are not) literate (partially or fully) in a domain if they can recognize (the equivalent of “reading”) and/or produce (the equivalent of “writing”) meanings in the domain –James Gee (18)

This is an essay in two parts.

Part One:   Write an essay that reflects on your work this term through the lens of James Paul Gee’s concept of “semiotic domains.”  What does it mean to be literate in this domain of “freshman composition”?  What does it look like to “recognize” meanings or “read” in this domain?  What does it mean to “produce”  or “write” meanings?  What kinds of meanings characterize this domain?

In the first half of the paper, pay attention to the texts you have read in this class: “Apocalyptic Dreams” by Dave Cullen and “The Dark Night of the Soul” by Richard Miller.  You can also consider the assignments associated with those texts, your assigned readings, and your papers to see what examples suggest themselves to you. You will need to spend time defining literacy in Gee’s terms so that your reader will know what you are trying to do.  Think in terms of two single-spaced pages for this section of the paper.

Part TwoChoose one of these two tasks.

  1. Find four examples from your own work, two of reading and two of writing, and use these examples to describe your own “college writing” literacy:  where you are “reading” or “recognizing meanings, ” and where you are “writing” or “producing meanings.”  You will need to quote from your own papers to show both your reading and your writing; you may also be able to identify places where you worked on reading but it served as background and didn’t make it into the paper.  Your annotations on your chosen text may help you with this aspect of the assignment.

  • Choose a non-academic activity—from playing a sport or video game to horseback riding or cooking (or watching television or building bird houses). Use Gee’s definitions of reading and writing to explore what it means to be literate in this particular semiotic domain by identifying specific texts that you, as a participant in this domain, “recognize” and “produce.”  Again, think in terms of two single-spaced pages for this section of the paper.
